I'm not sure if THIS can be called an instrument because it appears to be just a playback device.
(The sounds don't seem to have much variation though.)

This isn't new, but it's the first time I've seen/heard it.
I saw it at the Y2K Loopfest, but
unfortunately missed seeing Kevin Kissinger's performance.

Surely it is a musical instrument or at least it is being used as one, special in Indian music. Google at 'shruti box' or 'electronic shruti box' and get a lot of hits, pictures, sound samples and prices Smile

I think every musician must have one, at least those who are playing accoustic music. It is one of those instruments one can hand out to people not used to play an instrument (and there are lots of those around Wink) and want to join in a jam-session and simple: one shacker will do Smile

It looks like the shruti box has a bellows which must be squeezed, somewhat like an accordion or concertina. This requires some skill & dexterity.

The Raagini just has buttons to select some presets(?), and a knob for male/female voicing.

Hardly...

Is a rhythm box (like the Korh MiniPops) a musical instrument or not? It is devrloped, made and used to make music, so I think it is. 'Raagini' is more a type name, like the Flying V electric guitar made by Gibson.

Playing

The M1 Shruti Box is easy and satisfying to play, requiring minimal instruction to get started. The double-sided bellows system provides good control of volume and sustain. Notes can be changed on the fly and chords made in any key.

The instrument works by moving air through small metal reeds fixed inside a wooden reedboard.

The question in this quotation is the meaning of 'enjoyed'. Does it mean 'being played'?

An electronic shruti box is self playing: there is no musician needed to make it sound. But is it therefor not a musical instrument? A synthesizer is, but will it lose this quality as soon as it is being controlled by CuBase?
Where to draw the line...?

Is a radio a musical instrument? Stockhausen thought so and used it in his composition 'Weltklange'.

Well, I only got to hear drone playing, and the artist was just holding the box to a mic. Not really a performance.

Indeed, no performance at all, really. As rewarding as a drummer ticking only his two sticks.

The instrument wasn't designed for that.
