I made a Melody Generator with a 4017 and 4051 for a 4016 based Lunetta that I want to be able to switchable on and off. Would I just put a switch between the clock into the 4017 or would it go on the positive into the 4017 or something else??? I have the Lunetta already made, and the Melody Generator is breadboarded and running off of it, it is all working together very well but Im not sure where to put the switch.

I think I figured it out to put the switch on the clock into the 4017 and leave the negative and positive connections always connected. Going to maybe try a rotary switch somewhere in there also.

Dear Goat Destroyer,
You can put a switch between the clock and the clock input on the 4017, but you should make sure there is a resistor (10K, 100k, whatever) to ground from the clock input pin. Otherwise the 4017 will run wild when the switch is set to off.

It needs to be stabilized, which the resistor to ground does.

If you just cut the + power to the chip, it may actually try to run off of the current from the clock.

Sincerely,

this is what the 'clock enable' pin is for. usually the pin is held logical LOW for the unit to advance, switch it to HIGH to halt the progression. this makes it easy to control via external logic instead of just a switch.
