Welcome David Wareing |
|
|
This is a belated welcome to Dave Wareing to electro-music.com.
David was one of the earliest experimenters in electronic cross talk cancelation. His early work inspired many people, including Robin Miller and later myself, to investigate this exciting area of study.
DW, it is really great to have you here as a contributor. Anyone who has tried and discovered the beauty of cross talk cancelation should thank DW for his work.
One of the presets in the electro-music.com AmbiophonicDSP VST is named Wareing to honor DW. Not a Nobel Prize, perhaps, but we wanted to recognize him as best we could.

Too kind! I heard someone in Princetown blackballed my nomination for a Blue Peter Badge.
Did my PMs get though? |

Very glad David Wareing has joined this discussion. It was he who electronically processed crosstalk cancellation more than 10 years ago by mail to/from the UK! (prior I'd used a physical barrier). He's one of the giants on whose shoulders we stand. Welcome, David. _________________ Robin Miller |

Welcome, David!
I was unware of your contribution before now, but I use an Ambiophonic setup at home, and have employed it succesfully in an art installation.
Thanks again! _________________ Music: Whirled | Survival Kit

Hi again!
I have just popped in to plug my latest efforts, which involve a new type of dummy head fused with Ambiophonics.
Thanks in advance for any invaluable feedback.
All my files (mainly binaural) are public domain:

Regards,
David. |

I'm not exactly sure I understand what you are demonstrating; depth of field?
I'm glad you posted this because it give me a chance to hear another cross talk canceler. It has a different feel to the electro-music.com AmbiophonicDSP. I noticed in your recording, the separation of the speakers is very critical, else, if too far back, I detect a very wide signal with a hole in the middle. You do specify an angle and when I use that angle it works very well, but it's very sensitive.
I see you encoded the mp3 at 228 kbs VBR. I've found that one needs at least 250 kbs before the mp3 compressor starts to mess with the stereo.
Would you be willing to post the unprocessed binaural recording here, or on your other site. I'd like to compare. _________________ --Howard

I am playing with a new type of dummy head. The rest of the files are binaural for headphones. The head is different in several ways. It has less crosstalk at low frequencies so it is possible to generate ITD cues from intensity differences
the way stereo normally does. XTC is not very good at low frequencies because the head shadow attenuation is so small. The filter I use (on paper at least) converts intensity
differences in a recording directly to ITD, without cancelling and then crossfeeding. The combination of the two should be closer to acheiving 'loudspeaker binaural'
than normal binaural and XTC. The 'Zuccarelli knob' magnifies depth cues without adding audible reverb. by generating 'particular interference paterns' -hence the name.- Hugo Zuccarelli - Holophonics(tm)

Many thanks for your observations, Howard.

I specified the highest bit rate I could (Audacity). I think it was 'variable' and 'joint stereo' but I don't know my mp3s....

The binaural files are all on Freesound already, mainly as flacs, for download in pack DW. The built-in player is low bitrate mp3, I think, but useful for previews. Regards David.
