This is a suggestion for a utility module.

When building crossovers, or in various complex signal routings, there is often a need to take the difference of two signals, or to combine two without attenuation. The mixers required to perform these currently are large and, in the case of difference, have unnecessary knobs that take up screen space and which can be accidentally bumped. Large patches may require many of these.

The attached images shows two possible low-impact solutions to this. These are patterned after the gate and inverter modules, which have two independent processors. The upper modules perform either sums or differences, depending on the setting of the Inv switch. The second pair makes sums and differences simultaneously available.

Either of these solutions is equally good in my view; whichever has the least processing impact is preferable.

Realy? I think the small mixers are delightfull for these things and I don´t have any of the problems you have with them. Could you go into a little more detail on why the simple small mixers with the invert knobs don´t float the boat for you? I use those all the time for very similar aplications.

Most of your points would also be my own opinion for a hardware system but within the digital world I myself don´t realy "bump into" knobs. perhaps cleaning your mouse would help? :¬p

I use the current modules, I just find that I sometimes have problems fitting my patches on a screen and wish I could save space. I do think that some of my prejudices stem from a hardware background, and not wanting to waste inputs. I have occassionally adjusted knobs incorrectly, and the variation system in the G2 makes these easy to lose track of

All these do is simplify some large patches; nothng new otherwise.

Ah, yes, I see. That´s quite reasonable then.

A aditional value that these might have is that in patches made by others or by yourself from a while ago it can be quite hard to tell what use various mixers are put to, especially if the mixers that mix, filter and substract are placed close together. I think I´d use them but I´m not sure I would prefer them over some of the other sugestions currently up in the air.

Strong support for this suggestion from me!

There might be a little issue with the fact that the suggested module is 'dual function'. This might mean that the second adder/subtractor is calculated at the same time as the first one, but might be in another signal path where it maybe should be calculated later. Which means that the G2 should actually handle the module as two modules. Perhaps it already does this with other dual modules, perhaps not, I don't know. But this sort of thing is especially important in e.g. crossover filters etc.

So, a 'single function' module could be the better alternative, the one with the plus and minus outputs. As it looks like a promising building block and now two mixers modules are needed for that function, one to do the add and one to do the subtract.
