Midi controller for lights in drums |
|
|
so im saving up for some custom drums with lights, and i want to use a drum pad to control them. say a yamaha dtx multi 12, or a roland octapad. both of those have midi outputs. and the drums use xlr's to go to a DMX (i also dont quite know about the DMX but the company said they would supply it). and the lights can go different colors and strobe as well as fade between colors. this video shows kinda what i want it to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtDuYFF24p4 . i really dont know anything about this so i could really use some help!!
thanks |

So you just want the drumpads to control the ligths, not put them into the drums themselves ? That could actually be very easy to do .
DMX is for lights what midi is for sound equipment and it is actually very similar in concept. Standard is DMX512 which has 512 8bit channels
but there are bigger systems and maybe DMX1024 or more has become the standard nowadays (I haven't looked into it for a while). That might
seem a lot but one light can take up more then one channel, if you have an RGB light then there are usually at least 3 channels used for the
different colors and a couple more channels for effects like strobing, fading, auto colorchange etc.
Anyway enough about the theory, how do you control DMX with midi ? Well there's the easy part, there are plenty of DMX controllers which
allready have a midi input and there are also midi to DMX converters available. (like this). So if you're lucky then the DMX controller that
comes with the lights has midi in, else you will have to get one that does. Or build something yourself with an arduino or similar device. _________________ "My perf, it's full of holes!"
