Proposal for a Sound Lab controller... |
 |
|
Hi everybody,
Wouldn’t it be interesting if someone (may ADHDBoy?) would develop a “theremin-like” external controller for the Sound Lab?
It could be something based on photo-resistors, or other light-sensitive or proximity-sensitive components...
What do you guys think about it?

I am just starting to look into this, but I think it shouldn't be so hard to make.
Some simple things can be achieved with a solar cell. This one just gives out a voltage, which can be hooked up as a controller.
I'm not sure though, exactly which voltage the SoundLab likes for external control... is it between 0 and 5 V? |

very good, nescivi
as soon as you get some reliable results with your experimentations, please let us know.
Furthermore, this kind of controller could be very useful for the WP20, too.

...i _think_ (since this is how it's done commercially) that a ccd (that changes it's resistence in response to the presence of light) will have a faster (and more precise) response than a photovoltaic cell.
you might also look at the paia theremax, as it has 3 cv's and a gate out.

that is exactly what I was thinking about... but unfortunately my skills in electronics are ridicolously poor...

not bad the idea to build a theremax, but I think it would be much more fun to build something developed by a member of this forum...
the name of this new device could be: the electro-thereLab!!!

I did this with a 9v battery and a photo resistor. Ground the - terminal, and then run a photo resistor in series with the + terminal. Doesn't work great, and it's optic, but it gives the Theremin effect. Best to play in the dark with a flashlight. _________________ -Mike Walters

external controller |
 |
|
this is just great that other members are just in the same frequency:)
- i have just started to build a external cv and gate controller.
Project name "zeus"
it has four strobe light´s and for each strobe there is a photo transistor (BP103) and photo resistor (LDR) + some switches and knobs
- transistors for +5V gate and resistors for +9V CV.
this i no theremin but its optical - more like a beat-machine -
and my first thought was to use it whit some analog bassdrum-module
(DS7-clone) http://m.bareille.free.fr/ds7clone/ds7.htm
but it can be plugged to SL
i will post some pics when i get something that i can be proud of.
can some of you recommend some DIY analog drum-module?
SpellCheck roks!

...hey dnny, talking about "same frequency"?
let's check it out...
your project name is "zeus", and it is meant to be connected to a "drum-machine"... right?
ok...that's really funny 'cause I play with a band, and one of the other members is called "zeus" (it is his real name, not a nick), and you know what? he plays drums!!!
it is not a joke... it is just true!!!
post some pictures of your zeus when you are ready to.
bye

Something like this would be really cool to patch with the SoundLab:
http://www.drumbuddy.com/
You could have a photo resistor "track" on the coffee can control each osc, filter, amp, and anything cv.
Kind of like Raymond Scott's "Circle Machine"

...having built a theremax specifically to use as a cv/gate controller, i should point this out (although your milage may vary).
i find that knobs (or sliders) are actually better for controlling most things than "gesture". knobs stay where you leave them (as opposed to remaining perfectly still and hoping that no one else nearby is moving either).
...i know that the idea of a gestural controller sounds great, but in my experience, it isn't as expressive as one would think....a lot can be done with a knob for pitch and a knob for volume.

I did it, too...
And you were right: it doesn't work great (a minimum change of hand's position will produce a different tone), but, as you said, the theremin effect is guaranteed... and I have to say it was a lot of fun to me
I'm thinking of different solutions to protect the photoresistor with a small dark pipe in order to limit the influence of undesired light sources... I'm sure the final result will not be as professional as a real theremin is, but I think it's still going to be a lot of fun, to me at least
Thanks Mike for your suggestion.

great job daniel!!!
what kind of box is that? is it a safety box for money?
I see you didn't connect any piezo cell, so what kind of device will you use to trigger your DS7s? maybe that thing that you call zeus?

Hi ladislao
its a metal case used to hold hi-voltage fuses - i was accidently wondering in one abandoned factory whit my screwdriver and that night i got many of those boxes.
i have one wire whit piezo on the other end, but i also have the prototype of "zeus" ready and functioning... so soon i will have something to show...
hope to see your DS7 soon

Dnny nice pics I also have a question what are the red buttons?
Are they momentary switches to control something or are they on off switches? _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

thanks.
the buttons are momentary switches -> manual trigger´s

Is that in the layout or a mod you did. I went around looking for mods
as you suggested, but all I saw was one post you made for a cap sub for more bass. And one more I can't think of right know. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

nice solution... a good housing for a lot of different circuits
dnny wrote: | hope to see your DS7 soon |
you will see something as soon as I fix my problems with PCbs etching...
the first thing I will have do is to finish my WSG, than I will start building a three stage DS7 for drum sounds...
a kraakdoos box will follow, and finally (when I will be really confident with electronic circuits), I will build my Sound Lab...
Wild Zebra, the second mod you didn't remember should be about the possibility to connect a noise generator to the DS7 in order to get cymbals-like sounds...
Hey Daniel, this mp3 is just great... I love the beats with fast LFO

Congrats thats very cool. Not much drumming going on there
Just kidding. Can't wait to make one or more. Just ordered the last of my Soundlab stuff, gotta start the panel now. So you'll have to keep us posted on those mods. Is it hard to find those piezo's. Where did you order yours? _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |
