Noise Gate for Drum Boxes

Hello All,

I have a huge backlog of projects and am unlikely to finish them all. So, I thought I would release my notes on an interesting one. Feel free to use it anyway you want, but I'd appreciate my name remaining with it.

This is a noise gate for drum boxes using the NE570. I had this in mind for Twin-T self-oscillators which are inherently noisy when supposedly quiescent. With it, the background noise is completely cut off when no notes are played.

If nothing else, this proves that besides compressors, expandors and limiters, the NE570 can also implement a noise gate.

Note that only 1/2 of the LM358 is used here; I intended something else for the other half in a complete drum box. The response is quick attack and slow release.

As a bit of a disclaimer, please observe that this circuit has only been tested on the workbench, not the studio. My tests showed it to perform quite well, but I can't guarantee it'll be perfect for your applications. Anyway, feel free to play with it.

Many thanks Thomas! Ive got your 570 book, but was trying to find a decent noise gate, or figure out how to make one!

Would one have to vary anything for a lower amplitude (+/-4.5vish) input signal?

Thanks for posting this circuit.

I'm in the middle of putting a very old circuit together, the PAIA Programmable Drum Set. I had one of original kits way back when it was sold and I recall that it was somewhat noisy. ( The original kit/build has long since vanished unfortunately )

This noise gate should help that out a lot.
