I did a bit of maintenance on my balcony and spotted some flowerbuds on the pulmonaria (Lungwort).

I removed what was left of the sunflower which apparently did produce quite a lot of seeds.
I might try to grow another one from those seeds.

The Viola had a bunch of runners which were making their way outside of the planter.
I spread them around, slightly buried them and then pinned them to the ground.

I also spotted the Convallaria majalis (lily of the valley) and one of the hostas peeking through the surface

some pepper photos from the past 3 days to show their progress.

The Bhut jolokia Strain II and Dwarf Chiltepin seeds also germinated, so this year I might actually end up with all of the 8 different varieties I am trying to grow.
(9 if the Carolina Reaper survives the winter)

I have been transplanting some peppers, pretty much in order of growth rate.
The Bhut jolokia Strain II is also ready for transplanting but it'll have to wait another day or so.
When I transplant them they first go back in the incubator for 2 more days before I move them under another light.
It's very humid in the incubator and this gives them some extra time to re-establish their roots in the new soil without drying out to quickly.
However, space in there is limited and when I transplant them to separate pots they do of course take up more space.

Right now I am keeping 6 of each max. which means that I sadly had to say goodbye to a couple of seedlings.
7pot lucy is the only one of which I have less (3).

My current plan is to end up with 2 of each variety, all in separate pots (12 in total), except for the smaller Madre de Rios and Dwarf Chiltepin
of which I want to place 3 per (larger) pot. Those plans might change though and if I can place more I probably will.
I did already get some new pots, which are square and a bit smaller in diameter than the round pots I was using
but they are also taller. Resulting in a more volume with a smaller surface area.

I have 2 new poisonous plants in the form of Helleborus niger.
I've been wanting these for a while but they are usually 2 big and/or expensive. Since it's getting to the end of their flowering season these were on sale.
One already moved in with the lungwort and bittersweet nightshade, the other one is still looking around for a good spot.

I also got a pack of bulbs. Not something special in particular and the whole pack (of 50) was cheaper than 1 quality bulb so I am not expecting much.
1x Dahlia Red Skin II which honestly doesn't look too bad especially compared to what I had last year, and that one produced some nice flowers.
12x Sparaxis tricolor very small bulbs that look a bit too dry to me, not expecting much from these.
12x Liatris spicata blue Actually pretty decent bulbs that are clearly alive and feel very firm. These would probably fit in nicely on my balcony.
25x Allium moly look even worse than the Sparaxis bulbs but with so many of them some might still produce a couple of flowers.

All of these are supposed to flower in early summer and attract bees.

I think it's actually 4. Shocked
It's not so clearly visible on the other one but there appear to be 2 plants per pot. Not sure yet if I can/will seperate them.

I gathered some foxgloves (legally), cleaned them up a bit and put them in pots.
Most of them are still small and very unlikely to flower this year so it will be a challenge to keep them alive until next year.
I got two larger ones, one of which actually had a flower stalk from last year, so those are likely to flower this year.

suuuure
of course I ordered too many seeds again, which just arrived in the mail. (all seeds were ordered here)

Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sonata White' I really liked the cosmos last year, which I saved seeds from, so I got a different (white) variety to add this year.
Dianthus carthusianorum (Karthuizer Anjer) and Dianthus superbus 'Crimsonia' more small flowers for in the summer months.
I think these will combine nicely with the cosmos. The Dianthus superbus has very peculiar flowers.
Nigella orientalis 'Transformer' also has some rather interesting flowers which look very different than the ones of the Nigella damascena which I am familiar with.
Platycodon grandiflorus more weird flowers, at least before they open.
Antirrhinum majus 'Sonnet White' White snapdragons.
Calamintha grandiflora nice woodland plant with pink flowers.
Leonotis leonurus Also know as Dagga and often grown for its "medicinal" properties. Has some very nice flowers as well.
Solanum atropurpureum* aka "purple devil plant" Basically a nightshade from hell covered in thorns.
Coleus They did well last year, were easy to maintain and the bright colored foliage broke up the usual sea of green.

as usual I will probably fail to grow most of them but we'll see.

* more info about this plant and other prickly nightshades can be found here

Flowers on the Pulmonaria and lots of life in the container with the lilies.

I am considering getting more lilies and maybe some other summer flowering bulbs, though probably not this year.
I wasn't really a fan of bulbs but that's because I was only used to the early flowering ones. I do like to have some spectacular flowers
at the end of the growing season and bulbs are great for that. Maybe something like the Lilium Avalon Sunset or Lilium Golden Splendour.
There are also some really nice large Dahlias.

The lillies are looking frabjous and some older bigger shoots are now also starting to poke through the surface
to join the sun dance. I've counted about 10 of those at the moment which will likely all produce flowers this year.

From the cheap pack of bulbs the first ones to show some life are the Sparaxis tricolor, though it is possible
that it is actually Allium moly (or both) since I planted some of those in the same pot.
However, I also planted those in another pot and am not seeing anything in there yet. I guess time will tell.

One of the hostas (Blue Cadet) is also waking up and poking through the surface, the other one (Dress Blues) sadly
didn't make it and that was my favourite of the two. I might get some actual mini ones in the future, maybe something
like 'Teeny-weeny Bikini'
I've also spotted some shoots of the Convallaris majalis so those survived as well.

Maple 'tree' has some very healthy looking buds on it, I think it's quite content in that spot as far as that's possible for a tree on a balcony.
Now I actually feel bad for the hazel which is stuffed all the way back in a corner that gets the least amount of light.

I set up the greenhouse again, though it's more of a tent than a house, to keep the bulbs a bit warmer and to help
with seed starting. At the moment I've actually placed the bulbs and some other plants inside because it is getting
rather cold at night. I left the foxgloves out there but they should be fine with the lower temperatures.

A bit of DIY this weekend which resulted in a new and improved bird(s) feeder and with bird(s) I mostly mean crow(s).
It wasn't hard to improve on it as the previous one was half a coconut shell tied to the railing in a rather inconvenient spot.
Inconvenient for the crows because they had to poke their heads through the gap in the railing to reach the food.
Also inconvenient for me, or rather one of the planters* with succulents because that's what they stood on to get to it.

I had a couple scraps of impregnated wood left from a previous bird feeder, not a lot to work with and full of holes but
otherwise in decent condition. I kept it simple but did divide it into 2 compartments. a smaller one for dry cat food, crows
apparently like it, and the other one for shelled peanuts, that's the good stuff. I added a raised section so they have
something to break the shells on but I have no idea if they will make use of it. It's only held in place with some screws
so I can easily remove it. I sanded a lot,. and then some, to make the whole thing nice and smooth.

I am not really happy, with how it is mounted to the railing. It feels surprisingly sturdy right now but the rope will probably
loosen up over time. I do have some ideas but I first need some more materials for that.

* a dandelion made its way into it. not sure if they like to be transplanted but I might try placing it below the maple.

The new bird feeder is getting some attention but not what I expected. Instead of the crows it's the tits that seem to be really excited
with the easy to access peanuts. I did occasionally see them grabbing peanuts from the old coconut but I guess it's now a bit easier
for them to get a good grip on them. (they are quite large for those small birds)

2 of the Nigella orientalis seeds germinated, I hope a couple more will pop up though I still have plenty of seeds.
It's one of the few plants I've already sown, most of them will have to wait a couple more weeks untill the temperature will be a bit higher.
Another one I've already sown is the Solanum atropurpureum. I have one pot with seeds inside on top of a light so it gets some warmth,
and one pot outside in the greenhouse so that it can first get some cold temperatures. I don't know if these seeds require cold stratification
or not (some nightshades do) so we'll see what works and if any seeds germinate at all.

Another nightshade, the Atropa belladonna, has some new growth on it. It got a little bit neglected last year but I am happy it survived
and hopefully it'll grow into a nice healthy plant this year. I should probably give it a soil change though, because I spotted some tiny white bugs
crawling around in there and I don't know if they are friend or foe.

Argyreia nervosa is also starting to put out some fresh growth. Happy to see it's still doing fine in my kitchen until it can go outside.
It does attract some aphids which seems to be unavoidable inside with some plants (my peppers are usually spared though).

There will probably be another update tomorrow,..

It looks like 2023 is going to be a bulbous year. too much coffee

I couldn't resist ordering a couple of nice bulbs which arrived today.
These were directly ordered from a nursery (Fluwel) and the quality should be a lot better than that fun pack of bulbs I got recently.
Judging by the weight* alone these do indeed appear to be some proper bulbs but time will tell.

It was pretty difficult to make a selection as there are so many gorgeous looking flowers.
I would have liked a bit more variety but they do come in packs of 3/5/10 so that quickly add up. (both amount and price)

what I ordered was :
3x Dahlia Melody Dora
5x Lilium Golden Splendour
5x Nerine bowdenii Lipstick
The Nerines were added last minute just after I decided that I shouldn't get too many large bulbs and removed some lilies from the list.
They should flower pretty late in the year extending the flowering season for a bit after the lilies are spent.

I did actually receive more than what I ordered. The pack of Lilium Golden Splendour has 6 bulbs instead of 5 Razz
On top of that I also got a free pack of 5 Lilium Mister Pistache bulbs.
That's a total of 19 bulbs of plants that can get quite large. No idea yet how I am going to place it all but I'll figure something out.

* about 3kg in total

I am expecting some special plants to arrive tomorrow but those are small and for inside

All the bulbs have been planted and I've sown a bunch of the seeds which are placed inside the greenhouse.
The weather should be improving next week (not sure for how long) and help with germination.

I spotted some bees so maybe in a couple of years it'll be back to how it was. Maybe the lungwort is
attracting them because it's looking lovely right now. flower

It's been a month since I planted those cheap bulbs so let's have a look.

pot 1: Dahlia Red Skin II. Nothing to see here yet.
pot 2: Liatris spicata blue. At least one bulb is doing something.
pot 3: Liatris spicata blue + Allium moly. 2 bulbs that are showing some growth.
Since it looks similar to the growth in pot 2 I guess they also are Liatris spicata. Those were also the best looking bulbs of the bunch.
pot 4: Sparaxis tricolor + Allium moly. 4 bulbs are showing some growth.
It's probably the Sparaxis tricolor, otherwise I would have expected similar growth in pot 3.

so far it's doing as much as I was hoping for.

Since the temperature should be higher in the coming week I'll leave them for at least another week.
After that I might transplant the ones that show growth and get rid of the rest (will probably keep the Dahlia a bit longer).

The peppers might be getting just a tiny bit out of control. I shuffled them around to make better use of the lighting I have.
I should take some photos of the different varieties to show the variation in growth between them.

I had an idea for a larger planter to hang from my balcony. Maybe with some flowers (cosmos worked nice last year) or even some strawberries ?

Initially I was thinking of making the whole planter out of wood but I found a nice large (100cm) plastic one which is much more convenient,
not to mention cheaper and less work. I did make the support for it larger so that it can also fit 2 of the medium (60cm) planters or 3 of the small (40cm) ones.

When I went to the hardware store to get some material for it they had a six pack of strawberries for sale so,. strawberries it is.
These are an everbearing variety which means that they constantly keep producing strawberries for a couple of months instead of a single large crop.
I will probably have to share them with the birds and/or other animals, which I don't mind as long as they leave some for me.

I might plant some tagetes/marigolds between the strawberries which should be good companion plants. I still have some seeds but they are
a bit old and didn't have much luck with them before. They will probably be readily available for sale in the next couple of weeks anyway.
Strawberries don't like nightshades* btw, at least you should not place them in the same container. hmm I wonder if they like petunias ?
brb,..

According to a quick google search petunias also make great companion plants so maybe I'll get some of those.

*edit: I found lists that mentioned peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants and some other nightshades and from that
I wrongly concluded that all nightshades are bad companion plants for strawberries. However, Petunias also belong to the
nightshade family so I guess that some nightshades are fine.

While I was at the hardware store I tried not to get too distracted by the plant section but I did have a quick look at some alpine plants.
There was one that quickly caught my attention. It wasn't labeled but appears to be a Saxifraga arendsii.
