Sequenced fx noises. Sounds kind of like a broken computer in a generic 60's/70's sci-fi tv show Laughing

Lot's of fun.

Funny, computers never make the noises that are stereotypical to them. Shocked

yeah. did they ever? they probably (in the early days) made whirring, humming, and other rhythmic sounds owing to the movement of their mechanical parts.
somehow 'S&H-type' and 'random' sequences became associated with the sound of a computer computing. could it have something to do with the (imagined) sonification of data streams?

Could be. Maybe this stereotype comes from the sounds used in early movies that had computers. The general public didn't know what computers were or what they sounded like. I'm sure Hollywood producers told their directors they had to make noises. My experience in early computer centers, and even today's ones, was that the main noise was the sound of rushing air from the air conditioning systems. That wouldn't hack it in a movie. Roby the Robot made mechanical sounds. This would make for an interesting academic study. Maybe someone could find the source of these sounds and get a PhD.

The only time I heard a computer make the stereotypical noises (besides in games and demos) was when I had my Amiga. There was a random landscape rendering program called Vista, and you could turn on the sound of it computing. It would use something like colour value as it's source and use that to modulate the pitch of a sinewave. Some interesting noises came out of that, verging on FM in some parts, but because the Amiga was so slow most of the time it was just a fast atonal melody Laughing
