Check out the attached photo for a glimpse of the first four breadboards in a new series of custom breadboards. These are tiny in size, just a 5x5 array surrounded by a pair of 1x5 power busses (on either side). They are cool because it is rare to find two things: such a small size and power busses on a very small design.

The goal here is to continue my ongoing theme of customized circuit construction techniques, in this case the technique is the venerable breadboard with a new twist. I have released designs on thingiverse.com since about 2014 or so, revisiting the topic occasionally over the years.

At the moment I'm ordering parts and planning to construct a transistor-level set of designs that work by shining light at others of their kind. Right now I'm stuck with finding a way to power the boards. It looks like a 9V snap with3D printed battery holder is going to become the solution.

As usual I look forward to reading your thoughts - please do take a moment to reply!

Les

Very cool! I like that idea. How did you make the buses? Are they printed too?

Hi Cyno, great to hear from you.

All of the electrical connections are recycled from an old breadboard. They are 5x1 positions of 0.1 inch spaced "grabbers" that provide the physical and electrical behavior of the breadboard's interior mechanism.

It would be best to find a supplier or find a way to make these grabbers however for prototyping and test purposes recycling is a good approach.

The power busses are just additional 5x1 grabbers that are oriented differently. The power busses can be made longer via soldering. Also the breadboard ties have the same ability, so we can have breadboards that are 10x1 in size on either side of a chip, multiple columns, or just big patches of conductors. Neat huh?

I am still planning to make a circuit to show off these new tiny breadboards.

At the moment I am also 3D printing Christmas ornaments with little gifts in them and Christmas will be here very soon.

Another theme of interest is revisiting my chain mail spheres as shown here.

Stay tuned for more information.

Nice! That chain mail stuff you do is very cool. Have you ever combined your hobbies? Chain mail with a 3D printed circuit board that has flashing led's and oscillators Smile

Sure thing Cyno, why just she other day I was thinking about making music by recording my3D printer as it printed a bust of Bach getting drunk... again!

How did you make those spheres, Les?

Interesting trivia: for Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson hated the traditional grey knitting that low budget films did. But real metal chainmail would be too expensive.

So he had a couple guys making chainmail, the traditional way, but out of plastic rings, pretty much for the entire duration of the making of LotR.

Hi alan, I developed the technique for making spheres in a special way out of chainmaille back in 2008 or thereabouts. It's the main contribution that I ever made to the state of the art. I published three articles on the topic in the sculpture section of the articles collection of the M.A.I.L Artisans site.

I did not know that fact. Plastic rings are available at www.theringlord.com which is the premier supplier of maille supplies to the world.
