Subject description: Rate of Change: Acoustic Interloper ZIM set |
 |
|
Here's is my Nicecast recording + some photos. 4 stereo no-input mixers in the prerecorded tracks, my trusty Yamaha MG125cx, Galaxy Audio AXS-10 (the red mixer), little Alto ZMX862 with a Mod Core Nux guitar fx unit in the feedback path, and a Allen & Heath ZED 12FX. They all went into the improvised, prerecorded samples, with which I dueted/improvised live during the webcast; I didn't use the ZED during the live improv, enough to do already.
Also some Applied Acoustic Systems (AAS) Chromophone Marimba and Tasman flute (soft synths, physical models) sprinkled in at places.
I also used the Nechville electric banjo + fx in Live, although it is hiding in plain site around the 7-8:30 minute stretch. Ebow on electric banjo sounds a lot like zero-input mixer. I put some recognizable electric banjo in a later section due to requests. Someone mentioned sitar. I like to use strings in addition to the 5th as drones/pedal points, which is where that comes from.
The piece was inspired by 2 things.
1. Watching the Wayne Shorter tribute on last week's Kennedy Center show, and then reading a bunch of his recent interviews. They never practice.
2. Just finished re-reading two books on Escher, read all the text in addition to the pics. This was an Escher piece - a lot going on in its own universe, like looking down on a city scape where the viewer is outside the view. It has no unified intent, but you can't say that it's random. What goes on in the scene is what goes on in the scene. Some voices relate to each other; others don't. I did try to play live stuff against the precorded stuff by the usual means, listening first.
Serendipity - my nephew just pointed me to this 20 minute video on Escher.
Rate of Change derives, initially, from having prerecorded sections that I liked except they evolved too slowly, so I just time crunched them in Adobe Audition. No discernible pitch change, tempo change unnoticeable for the parts where there is no beat.
Thanks, PHOBoS, for setting this up, and to the stream ops, and everyone who played, and listened. Happy New Year.
