The Dead State

Originally composed in 2012. In between writing new songs, I sometimes dust off old ones and update them.

This dead state
In which I find myself
Without love or hate
How to define myself
Without a clean slate
In this mortal concession
Is there a lesson
That I need to learn

This dreariness
That envelopes me
In its hollow breath
And suffocates me
Like a living death
Like a love with no name
If love is a flame
Then I will burn

The emptiness you feel inside
Isn't yours alone to claim
I also know its name
The tide will always ebb and flow
But I think you'll be glad to know
That somewhere love lives on

This futile game
Turgid with irony
Leaves us just the same
And not so nicely
Does it point the blame
And love is felt
Like an aching welt
That burns in your mind

The emptiness you feel inside
Isn't yours alone to claim
I also know its name
The tide will always ebb and flow
But I think you'll be glad to know
That somewhere love lives on
