Here is a piano emulation patch using shapers and phase modulation oscillators.

Features:

Three "strings" for all the notes.

24 voices on an expanded G2.

Detuning techniques to knock out the dead perfect digital tuning and keyboard tracking of the oscillators.

Some front panel knob assignments for easy tweaking:

On Page A1:

"Tone" - Adjusts the overall modulation level into the carrier oscillators. Increasing the value will generate more overtones and make the sound brighter.

"Balance" - Adjusts the relative volume of the high notes versus the lower notes. Decreasing the value will make the high notes lower in volume in relation to the lower notes.

"StrgDtn" - Adjusts the tuning of the "strings" of a note in relation to each other. Increasing the value will increase the detuning.

"KBTDtun" - Adjusts the keyboard tracking tuning of the notes. A value of zero results in perfect pitch tracking. Increasing values will cause greater deviation of pitch tracking. Notes below E4 will be slightly flatter and notes above will be slightly sharper.

"NotePan" - Adjusts the stereo spread of the notes. A value of zero results in all notes panned to the center. Increasing the value will increase the panning of notes with lower notes panned to the left and higher notes panned to the right.

On Page C1:

"Attack" - Adjusts the attack time of the amplitude envelope generator.

"Decay" - Adjusts the decay time of the amplitude envelope generator.

"Release" - Adjusts the release time of the amplitude envelope generator.

"VelLnEx XFade" - Adjusts the crossfade between the linear and exponential velocity outputs of the keyboard module. A value of -64 results in a fully linear velocity response. Increasing the values will result in an increasingly exponential velocity response.

"VelSen" - Adjusts the velocity sensitivity. A value of zero results in a normal velocity response. Increasing the value will amplify the velocity resulting in a player with a less than heavy-handed style still being able to get the full dynamic range output of the keyboard.

"ModDrvL Level" - Adjusts the drive level of the modulating sine waves into the shaper modules. Increasing the value increases the level and distortion of the modulation sine wave. Higher values result in more odd harmonics, which will change the timbre of the sound.

"ModVel" - Adjusts the velocity sensitivity of the amplitude modulation input of the modulation envelope generator. A value of 100 will result in the greatest timbre change between softer and louder notes.

Enjoy!

Here is version #2b. This replaces a patch that I posted before [Piano 02VM.pch] that has an error (the Note Pan module should be set to Log mode instead of Lin mode).

I think it sounds more like a real piano.

Enjoy!
