Carl Cox bangin' 'ouse |

This one is inspired by a set I heard from Carl Cox at the beginning of the year. Sitting near the back of the tent exhausted (I'd just seen Tiefschwarz... phew!!) listening to this dude play some massive relentless sidechained house. Of course the patch didn't start this way, but after discovering a new sidechain trick I couldn't resist
Speaking of which, here's the trick. Use an AHD env triggered from the kick drum controlling levelmulti's which have your bass and whatever else you want running through them. Coupled with a mixer and a leveladd module you can get a great amount of control over the sidechain groove... It sounds a hell of alot cleaner than using the compressor module for sidechain and it's much easier to tweak - it doesn't matter how big or long your kick is, you can just go "I want the sound to rise up after x ms with x ms for the curve. It's also a hell of alot cheaper to!
There are also a couple of other useful tricks I came across... The first is using a patch loaded into the local slot which I've called "best of building blocks". It's got my favourite filters, distortions and other effects from the building blocks and other places - all with text labels for credits and they're colour coded so I can tell them apart. I've found this an absolutely great way to patch, with this baby sitting in the local slot. Need a new filter? Go window->bestbuildingblocks.pch2 and copy it over. If anyone wants I can upload this somewhere if anyone wants, but it's pretty easy to build your own.
And the last was to do with kick drums. I used to use the percussion oscillator module to do kicks, but this gives it a really annoying amp envelope curve that either needs post distortion or severe compression to make it sound big. Using an plain oscillator with the AHD env module again sounds _much_ better and doesn't require any crappy attacky compression. I can't believe I didn't do it this way before.
Hope this stuff helps someone out there... If not I'm having fun anyway
Oh, this one runs at 130 bpm, and there are no front panel controls yet so this is a bit boring after 30 seconds.. still haven't been able to buy the damn g2key yet The filter is fun, and so is the kick drum mute.

That was easily cured by setting the sequencers longer and at odd lengths ;D _________________ Jan

This is great!
I'd be interested in getting your "best of" patch. I'm not quite sure how you use this. Is there a way to load a patch into the editor without it being sent to the G2?
Thanks,

Carl Cox "Banging the Ouse"??
Has Carl gone a bit too far and the summer heatwave has annihilated his brain? - I dunno, but it's a great image
