Finished Echo Base effect - now called the CRASTINATOR - sits above a board for another (since finished to look exactly the same - I liked the layout of the knobs). PT2399. I also have built a PT80 (GeneralGuitarGadgets) using the same chip - I like that pedal a lot too.

The Crastinator can do mellow to CRAZY! I have questions out to a couple of people on:
-- a clean effects loop mod and
-- replacing the feedback pot with a different value to get more usable bottom before it starts to self oscillate (this mod I can figure out in the meantime

If anyone knows any of these answers off hand - let me know...

I have found the effect very useful and broad and would recommend it to anyone who asked. Board designed by Taylor Livingston. Taylor also adapted the gristleizer circuit/designed the boards I built, as well as designed the board for the two Tap Tremolos that I've built. Read about the build and the suggestions that led up to the pedal itself on diystompboxes.com

I will add some Tap Tremolo pics soon also...

PostPosted: Sat Sep 04, 2010 11:10 pm    Post subject: My first Weird Sound Generator Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I feel like I should have started my electro/music/hobby days with making a stock WSG instead of messing with effects, but that's the way it played out.

I love this instrument. Having had a bugbrand BoardWeevil, Postcard Weevil and W.O.M. first, I can see where he (he admits) got a lot of inspiration. I've especially liked modding it with Scott Stites ideas. I haven't gotten much support from Scott when I asked, but I don't really know his favorite email, and was hoping he'd read my thread and respond. Regardless, It has been a lot of fun - and his mods greatly deepen the versatility of the WSG. I've been able to add more switches to control, separate, and make reversible (to the original sound) his mods, thereby making even more effects/voices. I play out with it in another week and can't wait. The Crastinator compliments it nicely!

My Weird Sound Generator is cased in a old LaCie hard drive enclosure with soft maple end cheeks. I couldn't wait for the right knobs to arrive, so I pooled some different ones to dress it up. It has had 3 knob sets already - I'm looking for the right function and feel because I want to do the mini, ultimate and subcommander, and need a system. I'd like them to look similar, or at least hearken to each other. It is heavy in the steel case, which I like.

The first pic (with the least switches on the bottom row) is the earliest. I will add more to this entry as it changes from week to week.

Kit for this one was off of ebay - very easy build, and great retro sounds - begs for modding. Just wish it was a clone of the DS-8 (w/noise). Kludged together a trigger with an old drum pad, a forstner bit and a piezo buzzer from Radio Shack. It worked well. I traded it to telstarmagikistferrari.

I've since made another, that is sleeker looking, but honestly I haven't had the occasion to use it. I need to make more things that send trigger signal.

This is a LM386 combo amp I made, that is housed in a bikini wax warmer enclosure. The original well in the top, center (I guess) would hold water and then the container with the bikini wax would sit in it and warm like a baby bottle, I suppose. I just like the heat vents - implying power, which with this amp is the ultimate irony. The well, once taken out, left a perfect hole to put a 4", 8 Ohm car speaker into.

I use this as a bench test and I take it on my commute to play through while I drive, and am stuck in traffic. Also, I subconsciously practice with knob turns and effects tweaks, by playing with my right hand, but not taking my eyes off the road. I thin k it counts as practice!

It has a switchable output so it will cut the internal speaker and drive an external speaker - it makes a cool pan/jump effect.

Very nice especially the CRASTINATOR.

To answer your questions, if you want to get more out of the feedback pot before is self oscillates you need to increase the size of the resistor connected to the wiper of the feedback pot, changing the pot value won't do anything. On the board it's the 20k resistor right below where it says A100k under the feedback pot, try different values, I like 68k but other people have gone up to 100k.
To do a feedback loop it depends how you want it to act. Here's some info I gave someone else who asked about it, the schematic is here it's for the older version of the pedal, but the method is the same.

"To do an FX loop there's 3 places you could put it, these are marked with the green letters. This is what the 3 places will do.
A. The first repeat and all subsequent ones are affected, but each repeat only goes thorough the pedal in the loop once so subsequent repeats don't get more and more affected.
B. The first repeat is clean but every subsequent repeat goes through the pedal in the loop, so the repeats get more and more affected.

These are the easiest places to put the FX loop because you can just break the circuit at those points and add jacks for the FX loop, you don't need any extra buffers or anything.

C. The first repeat is affected by the pedal in the loop and every subsequent repeat goes through the pedal in the loop, so the repeats get more and more affected. To add the loop here you would need to add buffers before and the FX loop and maybe move the 20k resistor and 4n7 capacitor to after the Loop.

None of the loop positions will affect the dry signal although with A if you had a noisy pedal in the loop you might get some added noise in the dry signal."

Hope that helps, if you've got any more queries, feel free to PM me.
Apologies to everyone else for taking up valuable picture space Smile

Wow! That looks great! I love those chicken head knobs, and in blue even! And those jacks - combined with the knobs, reminds me of one of my favorite guitar amps. Is that a power led on the back??? Or just a reflection? I'm kind of surprised you put the main output and the midi jack on the back, but I guess you have your reasons - I'd have put those on the front with everything else.

Great work!

Hello! thanks! Very Happy
Led in back is combination of led mount transparent Cliplite 300 (serge modular type) and Led 5mm 6000mcd red transparent.
MIDI function connected only once. It's not patchable connection. It is more comfortable place in rear panel. Main output is in front panel (right-down). Headphones jack is in rear panel.

(excuse "my english" Embarassed )

Marco.

I don't recall if I posted about this thing I call "The Brick" because it's basically a brick of circuitry without an enclosure. IIRC my phone cam image transfer was down for a while.

Anyway, The Brick consists of a breadboarded Boolean Sequencer driving a Karplus Strong board to create guitar and percussion sounds, which then drives into a longer delay chip version of another Karplus Strong board which acts as a resonator for the first board.

This arrangement provides several control potentiometers which basically produce three main regions of operation: Normal, Deep Bass, and Overload. There are also many changes to be made within each region. The overall effect is quite nice and I have done a few radio shows on em for an hour using this device alone as the sound source.

I felt that the Aries synthesizer needed a Fixed Filter Bank ever since the 1970s. The Yusynth Fixed Filter Bank is very effective and am really happy that the Aries synth finally has one!

Yes, I made the PCB myself. As you may know, Yves (Yusynth) provides the PCB designs on his website.

Other modules I've built from Yusynth include the Clock Dividers and three of the Logic boards.

Regarding the logic boards -- they are easily modified to create useful functions.

One of the Logic boards is wired as specified to create 2 AND Gates, an OR Gate, and a NOT.

The second is modded to provide 3 special AND gates that go HIGH when both a gate and a trigger appear at the input and stays HIGH until the input GATE goes LOW.

Code:

Input Trigger:  __-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-_
Input Gate:     ______------------__________------____
Output:         ________----------___________-----____

The third is configured to be four gate buffer/amplifiers.

Just finished this -
Yusynth vc panner front

Yusynth vc panner profile

Yusynth vc mixer/panner back 1

and the low budget bracket I used for this - I am waiting on an order of brackets from the bridechamber, but wanted to get this done, so made a bracket out of 2 pieces of stair flashing from Home Depot - 44 cents each(!). It's not the sturdiest thing in the world, but it'll work for this.

Yes it is running on an arduino mega Smile Parallel out to ROM and DACs, DAC select control. DACs are in full quadrature multiplication mode, with level controlled by analog outs through a 4 pole filter.

also outputting counter for 3 MUX chips getting values for 32 pots and 28 switches including 2 grayhill 16 way mechanical binary output switches.

also outputting to MAX7221 LED driver chip for numeric displays and LEDS

PostPosted: Sun Sep 19, 2010 5:05 am    Post subject: Final knob choice / Mods in place - Weird Sound Generator Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

This Weird Sound Generator has been so playable, that I rewarded it with nice Aluminum knobs. I also decided on the knobs because they have no skirt, and are cylindrical. The Coarse, main controls get the larger knob - and the level, mix knobs are .5" diameter so that I can do a full turn/sweep with the end of my finger.

I don't know if I'm going to space the pots quite so close together in the future. I'm building Ray's MFOS Mini-synth next and it looks like it could be laid out on the same grid. I won't post any more process pics (sorry about that). I'll try to hold the pics until the project is really at an end - it's just that sometimes I modify/dress up effects and instruments for months...

Man. This thread is very inspirational! I was reading an Aesop fable to my 4 y.o. two days ago and the moral was "sometimes a good idea is not enough", meaning (or commenting) that most people will spit out a good idea, but don't have the initiative, knowledge, etc. to follow through with it. You guys do!
