I do as well, and I agree. You have to break the routine from time to time, whatever it may be, and especially so with regards to computers.

Breaking routine is such a key for me - it's why I have several synths and hardware effects - and also use the computer for processing and effects and drums and such... or why I switch to bass or trumpet - or settle back into piano. Changing instruments and recording techniques is what gets me thinking in different ways.

Just shifting the type of song I'm working on can be very refreshing - banging out a harder industrial tune or going ultra minimal.

When I come back to those tried and true patterns that I've used for a long time - the certain ways of playing things and recording - those changes influence and expand the "normal" things I do a bit.
