sMs Electronics is very proud to publish and distribute the new 118 page book by Thomas Henry entitled :

The VCO Chip Cookbook

Now the book is being sold at a lower price !!

It's impossible to do serious analog synthesis with chips like the 566, 8038 and XR-2206, right? Wrong! They've got loads of life left in them, but only if you let an outsider like Thomas Henry steer you in the right direction.

Forget the pessimistic data sheets from the manufacturers; in this amazing guide you'll learn the secrets only a handful of designers are aware of. Drawing extensively from his personal lab notebooks, the author sets the record straight, presenting accurate design details in a friendly yet complete form.

To round out the deal, there are over one-hundred figures, tables, helpful hints, schematics, design equations and simulation graphs, making this the single most important resource for electronic music designers wishing to exploit integrated VCO chips. The only mathematics required is a smattering of simple high school algebra. Best of all, every circuit and technique described has been thoroughly tested at the workbench; you can design neat circuits with confidence now.

Learn how to put the 566, 8038 and XR-2206 chips under linear or exponential control, get square, sub-octave, triangle, sine, ramp and pulse-width modulated outputs, add in hard sync, balanced modulation, temperature compensation, interface to CMOS, and even obtain a wild rampoid output with no commercial equivalent!

As icing on the cake you'll find resource information, a complete bibliography and three appendices showing you how to build your own VCO test equipment.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Thomas Henry is the author of over 130 articles and eight books on the subjects of mathematics, electronic music, microcomputers, astronomy, magic and caves. Most days of the year, you'll find him as an extremely busy mathematics instructor at South Central College in Minnesota. His leisure time activities include bird watching, exploring grasslands, amateur astronomy, magic, road trips to National Parks and flower gardening. The bat is his favorite mammal.

The attached PDF file contains the books table of contents so please give it a look.

The front and back are made of heavy "red" card stock and has a red spiral binding so that the book may open flat on your workbench.

The price is $19.00 plus $4.80 shipping in the US and Canada and $8.00 all other destinations.

Please PM me if more than one book is requested.

Payment is accepted via Paypal at the following account:

Laughing Thats funny, No I'm glad to see em' printed. I just wanted to give back to the community and I figured that's my day job so I'd put it out there. Please don't pity me Wink. Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to buy any for awhile. I really need to start reading more. I've learned alot in the past year, but I'm still very "paint by numbers" I need to hit the books.

Yes, the "10 Step Voltage Reference" has a layout on A2, page 104.

Shocked I don't visit a forum for a day, and see what happens?

Great news, Bill! A journey inside the often overlooked chips of music. Woo Hoo!

The world domination plan is going swimmingly.....

Questions: Magic Smoke Electronics lists itself as "the exclusive licensed source of Thomas Henry's books on do-it-yourself musical electronics" yet this VCO book is not listed there.

And this post claims this book is only available from sMs Electronics. Searching the sms electronics home page for the word "book" with google returns no results. Can someone please clarify all this?

Let me jump in on this. First off, you need to realize that I have always been a freelance author and designer. I have sold my stuff to Polyphony, Electronic Musician, Radio-Electronics, Electronotes, Common Mode, Tab Books, McGraw-Hill Electronics, Nuts & Volts, and others; essentially, whoever will help me pay my bills gets what I write. It's likely I will continue in this fashion as long as I'm able to keep going. For what it's worth, I have never licensed anything to Elby Electronics, in case you're wondering (but I did have a near brush with Ronco when I invented the Pocket Fisherman two days after someone else released it).

A couple years ago I arranged with Magic Smoke to take on the Mankato VCF, and I also granted them the exclusive rights to all of the material previously published by Midwest Analog Products. They still have those rights.

In the meanwhile, I have written several new things which I wanted to get out. Realizing that Magic Smoke is swamped with the Mankato filter and the MAP manuals, I arranged with sMs to undertake the VCO Chip Cookbook, for which I'm extremely grateful.

We'd all like to think the Internet is instantaneous, but truthfully propagation on Google takes time. Consider this. I submitted the manuscript to sMs Electronics about two weeks ago (and it's a big one), and here we are June 7 with it already shipping. I think that's remarkable. Is it any wonder Google doesn't know about it yet? And, yes, sMs is the exclusive publisher of this book, although they have the rights to wholesale it later.

So here's the dope. Scott Stites is the official publisher of all of my freebies on his Web site, sMs the official publisher of the VCO Chip Cookbook and Magic Smoke the official publisher of the MAP documents and the Mankato VCF, and when they get caught up possibly other stuff as well. And of course, I will continue to publish articles in whatever magazine will take my stuff in the future. (And there may be another book coming, too).

As State Machine indicates, there is a PCB layout for the test equipment voltage source in one of the appendices. But in general, this is not a book of complete modules, but as the title indicates, a cookbook. In other words, this is really a treatise for people who want to design and customize their own analog synth circuits. For that reason, I give tons and tons of design info, but leave the actual PCB work to the reader who has worked out a circuit meeting his or her own design goals.

Of course, I'm prejudiced, but I don't think you'll find any other cookbook like it. There are lots of design ideas in there virtually no one knows about!

Thanks for clarifying all this Tom Very Happy Well said. I also want to mention, in addition to the VCO chip handbook, sMs Electronics will also exclusively market the UD-1 drum voice boards and kits.

Believe me, we all do not get rich off of this stuff. We do it because we love to do it for the most part. Yes, a little extra cash is good to but we have a common passion for electronics as applied to audio synthesis. I personally love to make people happy and keep the synthesizer DIY community alive and well. That is the ultimate goal of sMs. I don't ever want to see it die away like building home computers from scratch did years ago. Those home computer hardware forums were fun and I personally wire wrapped many a microprocessor based projects in my past.

In addition, I will be making an internet presence soon with a music and hardware web page in the coming months. Right now I juggle my studies, work, sMs Electronics, my music performances, and my social life. The web site will be there in due time. Shocked

Thanks
Bill

Synthesizer DIY is FUN and rewarding, thats why I do it ...

Thanks,
Bill

Speaking of which, I better get on the hot foot! I'm three projects behind, believe it or not - the VCA, a filter and a new thing that plunked into my inbox tonight. I'm going to breadboard that one tomorrow.

Cheers,
Scott

I just paypalled the money.. looking forward to reading the stuff on the XR-2206, as I've had a lot of fun with this little chip, without having to worry about designing an actual oscillator.. just the things to control it and make it make weird noises Smile

Got mine in the mail Friday. Thanks for the quick shipment! I have devoured it and committed it all to memory over the weekend!

I think the best part is that the current XR VCO is not totally maxed out feature-wise. When I get a chance, I plan to make a Maximus XR VCO with everything from the book!

Bill

PS: I will post on the keyboard circuit very soon, just getting last minute things done with UD-1 ... OK? Didn't forget that cool project.

Thanks to Thomas for the update. I've revised the phrasing on the MagSmoke because we're obviously not the *only* source of TH books.

I'll go ahead and say it: Magic Smoke was slow getting off the starting line, and I'm sure that Thomas wondered what the heck was wrong with us! Wink We chose to "redraw" the old books and issue them as PDF files. Bad move? That's for you to decide. A little more on that, below.

Meanwhile... Congratulations to Bill (State Machine) for getting the VCO book deal; he's well known 'round these parts, he was really speedy in delivering SN Voice boards, and I personally will buy from him again.

Having said that, Magic Smoke is also coming out with another one of Thomas' books, and you will certainly be seeing more products from us.

Now... If you folks really want printed books, we'll make those, too. Don't clog up the forum with votes for them, just drop a note to magsmoke@gmail.com and tell us which book(s) you want on paper. We found what looks like a great publishing source, so hardcopy is an option.

John,

That wouldn't be a clog at all - and I'm looking forward to more from Mag Smoke. I'm curious - is the Compander Book on deck? Man, that would be sweeet. The 570 is still quite accessible (and actually still being made in surface mount form). The noise book, IMO, is a classic also. And the percussion book and....well, you get the picture.

Bill - got the book, love it - it's beautiful. If you're selling time in a bottle (and not the Croce song either), can you send me a case of that? Man, soooooo much going on. I'd complain if I didn't love it so.....

Cheers,
Scott
