Got my boards - they look great! I seem to recall the latest run of klee boards also having that white solder contact stuff - it was absolutely no problem to solder. |

Also talked to Scott at Bridechamber and sounds like he expects to have panels in before the end of the year. |

Arrived in New Mexico on the 14th. WOW - excellent job - these are superb. Great documentation also.
Nice words about Larry Hendry whose wonderful DIY spirit lives on.
Much appreciation Thomas!

Is anyone planning to use their own home-made vactrols (aka hairballs) in this circuit? |

No but I want to rig up switches to use NSL-32's instead of or in combination with the VTL's though - or some way of easily plugging in little vactrol modules for easy swap out. Haven't decided the exact plan of action yet. There's no room for a socket there - will probably have to piggyback something - or something. Besides VTL5C3 I also have some VTLC2's but no 4's. I may just breadboard that part and build 2 different hardwired versions of whatever 2 combinations work/sound the best. That would be easier and tidier. If the vactrols could mount on the switch itself that might work though...
The board is compact - there's little room for anything where the vactrols go -if you go the hairball route it will have to be nice compact hairball I would think. You can always go vertical like fancy restaurants do, to build up their 3 green beans to look like a meal!
Cheers

Brainstormer,
Hang in there on the shipping. People from Israel are getting boards before people from Chicago. Germany had PCB's show up in 3 business days and France in 2. Delivery times are all over the map. Remember that shipping via First Class/Air Mail can take up to 10 business days. So far 5 have passed. Keep me, errr... "posted" on your postal arrival.
BTW, Some countries had a handful of packages all arrive at once (in customs) due to a larger number of orders from that particular country. All say "Commercial Sample" and some orders in the UK were quite large (up to 16 PCB's). I wonder if that is making customs folks think something fishy is going on?
TekniK,
That is one NICE panel!!! Really fits the Buchla origin... Are you going to silkscreen or FPE your panel? Can't wait to see the finished product,

Good ideas there!
I have 2 vtl5c3's for one board, but i'd like to try something slower for the 2nd. I've never made a hairball (coughed a few up, though ), but i'm wondering what kind of response different coloured LED's will give? And if there's a point at which the response becomes so slow that it becomes sloppy or unusable (if at all)..
Has anyone done any experiments with different coloured LED's in hairballs? |

Mr. Banana,
You will find that a trigger or pulse only is frequently adequate to use with the LPG. The faster the Vactrol, the more need for an AD/AR/ADSR. For example:
VTL5C2 (corrected info) - middle of the road speed, between 5C3 and 5C4. Longer decay and a bit slower attack, although not as slow as the 5C4.
VTL5C3 - Fast, but natural Vactrol decay makes minimum response times long enough for use with trigger or gate alone
VTL5C4 - Slow, don't even think about VCA mode with this unless you want long decay times due to the Vactrol
All this is subjective and IMHO of course. What I find more useful is a gate to trigger converter with a control over the length of the outgoing pulse. Here's why: The pulse length acts as the "sustain" for the Lopass Gate circuit in relation to the decay time of the response. You see, Vactrols have an established opening time and an established decay time. Changing the length and amplitude of the trigger is VERY useful when looking for different responses from the Lopass Gate. That is why I recommend for all builders to have a CV input with an attenuator. Lower amplitude triggers will open the gate/filter less and can be used to dial in a certain response.
I'd build one Lopass Gate out and play around a bit before deciding on a final panel design. I have learned A LOT about LPG behavior in this whole PCB process and panel design and needs have changed both depending on the vactrol used and final intention of the module. One example would be that I could probably omit the mode switch with a VTL5C4 Vactrol entirely due to the effective use as a filter but not so effective use as a VCA. But, those who know me understand I won't omit anything usually so I don't have functionality regrets later on. _________________ Thomas

Teknik, this is awesome! Will you be having it made for Front Panel Express by any chance? I'd love to see the file, if so. I would like to do basically the same design-- but I've been using FPD thus far and will probably stick to this format.
If not FPD, how will you fab your design? Thanks for posting! |
