Since normal oscillator hardsync aliases deep down into the audio spectrum, really ugly, I've been trying some alternatives to get somewhat the same sound but with better quality.

Here's a trick that uses phase modulation by a sawtooth wave at the same frequency. Mathematically, PM is the differential of FM, which means that one can do PM via the carrier FM inputs by running the modulator through a highpass filter first.

Rather than modulating the FM index for the "sync sweep" sound, I modulate the frequency of this highpass filter from full 21kHz downwards. I think this sounds better.

This approach also has it's issues. Since the PM isn't 100% precise, the carrier oscillator phase will slowly drift. Depending on application, this isn't a big deal. When involved in heavy "sync sweeping" this is all but unnoticable. Also, this approach does have aliasing issues too. But I find them a bit less objectionable.

cheers,
t
