Just thought I'd put it out there. With so many Buchla projects lately, maybe there's some more people like me here who'd be in for grouping on a Rogan custom order.

Yeah?

Edit 1/1/09:

This group buy is now moving forward. It's not too late to sign on but I'll need your order immediatly. Thanks everyone for making this order possible! Just need more DIY Buchla modules to us them on now.

It depends on pricing. If it is ok I'm thinking of about 70 or even more?

I inquired once, and was given the 1000 part figure for minimum custom jobs. I don't remember the price exactly, but, I'd guess it wouldn't be more than $2 a piece when buying 1000. I'll e-mail the website tmrw.

I am interested! I really love Buchla knobs. There are three that I know of: large skirt, small skirt, and cylindrical. Which are you thinking of getting? I am sure that there are enough interested people here for us to buy 1000 at least. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Yes, there are 3 types (maybe more) that were used by Buchla. Not including the current 200e style of course.

I think the skirts on the old ones were detachable. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).

Any chance of us ordering the skirts? I have tons of Buchla knobs but no skirts!

No problem, it seems like everyones building buchla (and wanting to own). So we may as well do a group buy for the knobs.

I was thinking the small skirted knobs, would be the first ones to buy, and are probably th emost commonly used on the 200 series modular. Then maybe the small cylindrical ones.

I filled out a form to ask about this order, I'll post when I hear back.

Let me show you guys what I'm looking at:

http://www.rogancorp.com/classic_alpha_series.html

I've seen some Buchla's with knobs that have much more knurling, rather than just the wide bands, but I don't know where they come from (I prefer the densely knurled knobs)

I have a few of the small knobs in blue also, but I'd definitely like to get some more. However, to me, the most specifically buchla-like knobs are the skirted ones-- and as far as I can tell-- the skirted ones, in blue or red, are impossible to get outside of a custom order:
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.[/url]

I'd actually prefer the finey knurled ones (like the small non-skirted in your link to the SOU)--to the more typical banded ones (as in my link to the Rogan site):

But this is all a matter for consensus among anyone interested, and just conjecture at this point. I've never conducted a group-buy before, and I am initially just seeing if there are many people interested.

I'm attaching a PDF of the Alpha knob specs that Rogan sent me. They want the model type/size and shaft size before they can give me a quote.

I'd like to get all of the sizes-- the small skirtless, the medium skirted, and the large (VCO) skirted in both blue and red. But i don't know if the first order of 1000 will be limited to one size/style/color. If it is, I'd opt to get the more common smaller skirted in blue.

Looking at the PDF, I'm assuming this is the smallest alpha knob, #AR-0-SK-M. I already have similar knobs in black, both the skirted and unskirted--and they are .5 cir, with skirt, .9.

I would prefer a 1/4" shaft.

Does this sound right to everyone?

Looking again at some pictures, thinking I'm now seeing 3 different sizes of skirted knobs on the Buchla 200 system, apart from the small un-skirted knob. Take a look:

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

The big skirted blue knobs on this 259, appear to be larger than the med(?) red ones on the 219 Touch Controller, pictured in above post, and here:

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

So, I believe I'm seeing a total of 4 knobs varieties on various Buchla 200 modules; But I'm still, initially anyway, most concerned with the smallest skirted version-- because they seem to be used more often than any of the others.

There are two styles of knob from Rogan (original Buchla knob manufacturer), that are pretty close to the 200 series knobs. First, there are the Alpha, that I linked to above, and second, there is the RB67, detailed here:
http://www.rogancorp.com/rb_sk.html

The Alpha's, which are closest to most of the Buchla 200 pics I've seen, apparently are available standard only with a push on, "D" type shaft hole. They can be customized for a 1/4" shaft and set screw-- but I have been told that this option is very expensive.

The RB67, however, can be ordered standard with 1/4" shaft and set screw. It's very similar to the Alpha, but has the finely knurled side. Based on pictures I've seen, I believe this type of knob may have been used on some, perhaps later, Buchlas.

The minimum order for either is actually just 500. I've just inquired, thus far, about the small skirted size--the "0" model number for both Alpha and RB67.

The price, per unit, for an order of (500) of the RB67 in red/blue, with white arrow, is $2.70 (before shipping and handling, taxes, etc.).

I'll get a quote for the standard red/blue Alpha knob, with arrow, in the next couple days, but I've been told that they are cheaper than the RB67.

I'll also be getting some samples in the mail, and I'll post pics.

Ok, I just got the quote for the Alpha series, d-shaft, skirted, size '0', in blue or red, with white arrow, as pictured below.

For an order of 500 pieces: $0.85 per part
For an order of 1000 pieces: $0.79 per part

This seems pretty phenomenal--much less than I expected. Although, I'd prefer the finely knurled RB67 with 1/4" shaft and set screw, the price of these Alpha series knobs is hard to argue with.

Is anyone here interested? Even at $.85, I would definitely need to split this order with some people. I don't want to spend more than $100 total. I will also definitely wait until I get the color and size sample before deciding.

1/4" D-shaft, or 6mm D-shaft? I read the page but I'm still not clear. All of the D pots I find are 6mm.

I spoke to the representative lady on the phone, and I think that they are available in several D-shaft configurations. 6mm and 1/4", I believe.

Is D shaft really that bad? I know that on many pots, for instance, the shaft is split in two--presumably so that you can use either 1/4" or D-shaft knobs.

I'd be willing to work around it for .85 or .79 cents a pop, no one else?

the RB-67-Skirted are 2.70 each, but come with 1/4" shaft.

its a shame, all my pots are from futurlec and hence are not d-shaft. i guess this is what i get for buying cheap. thanks for the effort eric, will have to skip this one.
