you're right - there's not a great solution. And I have limited space, and currently would rather put the money into modules, not racks and enclosures. That will change some day...

In my rig, it's only the very bottom row that's tricky - i sit on a drum stool when using my modular, and it's just the right height - that lowest row is a bit of a drag though, it's mostly modules that get no real-time tweaking down there. I have all the knobs and jacks memorized though, and can work down there without having to get on my knees to look....

nice pics by the way, that's a great system, must be a lot of fun Smile

It did cost more than a japanese bike, but less than a Harley Davidson.
I have no site but make some music on it. I´ll try to add some samples, and hope I won´t hit the download cealing.

Your "08 mix1.3.mp3" is a tad more beautiful Wink

You really make the digitals sound attractive! A high compliment if there ever was one.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
To me the analog/digital issue is a not a question, really. It is just sounds of different flavour. The analog ones are much more expensive tho get, though.
I have two 2nd had Roland synths (JV-1080 and XV-2020), gear that is more or less for free these days, compared to when they where new. But within the mix, they sounds as well as they did when they where state of the art. To base the whole sound spectrum on only an Roland Synth is a bad idea to me, but when it costs the same as one single analogue module, it is a bargain. There is some nice sounds in each synth, no matter what type it is.

Just thought I'd jump in here.

This is me in front of my Aries control panel. The two Aries keyboards are not shown in this pic -- these days I tend
to play the Aries via MIDI and the touch sensitive keyboards (the VZ1 and K2600) below.

The green, lighted, buttons on the left is a matrix patch system that allows me to patch control voltages to each
of the nine VCOs, two filters, and Phaser. The double column of buttons route the Gate Trigger signals to each of
the six Envelope generators.

To view the specs and hear tracks from the vintage Aries Synthesizer, go to:

hey Kevin - I'm the guy who used to be in Shawnee, KS and moved back to NM. I would have sworn that was a green CRT screen there at the upper left in your pic-weird! When I come visit there I'll shoot you a PM. Love to hear your system.

Mono- you're going to trip and hurt yourself man! OR damage some gear arrrgggh!

Well, the person playing the synthesizer is as much a part of the result as the synthesizer, so it seems appropriate to include ourselves in the pics.

And, hey... it is fun to put names and faces together. Smile

Bloody hell! Shocked

I really shouldn't have looked at this thread, should I? You've all posted up some of the most gorgeous synth porn I have ever, every seen. Here, in this one post!

I blame elektro80 for tempting me into the modular world...

Here is my own personal system, there are plenty of empty panels still.
I just added two towers of six SixPacs in between each side, which required a larger ten foot long butcher block table to fit it all on, and while I was at it, I finally added caster dollies on each side so I can finally pull it out from the wall to work on the backside of it all. (13) Power Supplies total.

The two docking SixPac Towers are designed to pull easily out of the rig to go mobile on their own and have cable pass-throughs to the rear underneath. The other four cabinet spaces each have keyboard risers with spring reverb tanks hidden inside. Total system signal flow is left to right.

I'm presently using a quad bus Ramsa mixer, but am looking to go to an eight channel bus, the Toft 32-channel would be nice, but it is not particularly surround sound friendly, maybe a continuum controller too someday?

I know, I know... "Where's My Order!" Lol!
Well, a girl's gotta have some fun sometime, right?

Cynthia,

Wow! Impressive system, indeed.

Do you have a website? Would you share some of the music that you create with your synthesizer? Would enjoy hearing it in action!

p.s. -- is Cynthia your real name or a play on the word "Synthi"? Smile

Howdy!

Thanks for the kind words, and to answer your question Kevin, Yes, Cynthia Webster is my real name, (not to be confused with the EMS Synthi model A) and I do have a website www.cyndustries.com and have been manufacturing modular synthesizers under the Cynthia brand name for six-years. We've shipped thousands of modules to (24) countries.

I haven't had a chance to record much lately, the last show that I did with my system was playing live with Doug Lynner at the Sacred Elixirs Festival at the Santa Jose Convention Center a couple of years ago.

Some of my music can be heard at www.thiaMedia.com and hopefully I will be releasing a whole lot more of it in the near future. My personal emphasis is now on surround sound synthesis and I am interested in pursuing musical projects where six or eight track surround sound takes are recorded as an organic whole, instead of creating surround exclusively from only mono or stereo sources. Toward this end, I am a believer in empowering synthesists with new tools to allow discrete surround sound without the need for transcoding - just in order to hear one's work.

My own system is perhaps one of the largest Modcan format banana modulars, however there are some other biggies in Switzerland, France, Germany, Vermont, and also here in California. I keep a working example of each design that we release as a "Go-by" and have been slowly building this system in my spare time, Naturally, it has taken years to build... one module at a time.

Best Wishes!

Cynthia

Thank you for sharing the link. Excellent music and excellent spacial effects, too.

I will perform my set for electro-music in surround-sound. To experience discreet surround-sound (as opposed to encoded/decoded) is a lot of fun -- very rich textures are possible.

One thing that I could really use would be a true, surround-sound VST plugin. Cubase SX offers a surround reverb however can only be fed from the front left-right. To keep the timings right, I delay the rear channels then send them to the front. Better than nothing -- but not as good as a plug in that would let me input the entire buss as a whole (and in turn, the plugin calculates all the timings).

I have a Lexicon MX400 unit however have a shortage of analog outputs in my RME800 (without using an ADAT converter). So, I've regrettably had to shelve my MX400 and use software reverb instead.

-- Anyway, I'm off-topic here. Enjoyed hearing some of your music.
