i wonder.

what i wanted was an IC with an output that switches between HI and LO with each clock signal, or better: which changes it's state with each incoming clock signal. 1st clock pulse output = HI, 2nd clock pulse output = LO and so on...

i thought that would actually be an flipflop, an i tried to understand the logic-tables of the datasheets, but i did not get it...

Divide by two with a D flipflop : http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/counter/count_1.html

A JK flipflop will behave like a T flipflop (toggle) when J and K are tied to 1 both.

The wikipedia article seems not too bad ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip-flop_%28electronics%29

Ahhh, you beat me to it, Jan.

I recommend the CD4013 Dual D Flip Flop because it's easier to understand.

One concern is getting the ff to come up in a known state when power is first applied, and that's where SET and RESET come in. If Set is grounded, a high applied to Reset forces Q=0 and /Q=1. Set does the opposite. A simple "power on reset" (or set) would be a pull-down resistor and a capacitor to +V.

Yep, what you want is a toggle flip flop, which can be formed from a D flip flop by adding feedback and driving the clock with the input signal (inverting feedback that is). I like flip flops, I wear them all the time here in sunny warm south Florida! Razz
