I got to play with Hermann Helmholtz' original "double siren" instrument
at the workshop last weekend and now there is a YouTube video...

Here is the YouBlurb:

Hermann von Helmholtz, in his famous book "On the Sensations of
Tone", describes an experimental double siren that he used to
investigate how the ear perceives beats, difference tones, and the
consonance and dissonance of musical intervals. In May 2007, Martin
Carlé restored the siren to operation and demonstrated it at the
Workshop "Klang und Ton -- Fortschritte in der Erfüllung von
Helmholtzens Vermächtnis", which took place at Humboldt University in
Berlin. As the conference drew to a close, I wrapped up my talk and
then ran my fingers across the beautifully crafted wood and brass
instrument. Martin offered to let me play it -- how could I resist
the lure of the siren's song! Here is the resulting improvisation...

Enjoy!

The guy on the left of the picture looks like Jan St Werner from Mouse on Mars (I wouldn't put it past him and I know that he got some residency at a university recently).

More fun can also be had with this if, once the youtube video is loaded, moving the movie position slider on screen (with one's mouse), can yield some rather groovy granular synthesis effects with the resulting drone! Shocked Cool

Hey, nice video !

It must be the season or something as I just read an article in the newspaper about an exposition called soundbites where a group played a piece with five sirens. According to the article this was not so unique as there has been a siren orchestra (de tooverfluit (magic flute or Zauber flöte)) in the past (Henri Nabers).

Unfortunately I could not find any recordings for this, so when anyone has more on it .... I'd love to hear that orchestra.

Some googling learned that the siren has been applied in a well known piece by Edgard Varèse, that one can be heard through here , not in 3D though. Hope the Dissevelt link will be tried as well Very Happy (and there is even more classic stuff there, fragments only though).
