My computer is a OSX 10.3.3 (emac) , & I simply don't yet have the cash-flow to upgrade to Leopard just now.

My question to the cyberworld of electro-music is about building personal websites:
I installed MAMP and my really very rudimentary php texts seem to work well, (only I'd need to use scripts that operate with PHP5 rather than the scripts that were configured as tutorial examples for an earlier version (no.2 actually)).
So I kind of stand before the question of whether I painstakingly learn how to program PHP & MSQL (the OReilly Intro to PHP5 is supposed to be good for the non-experienced like myself)

or

whether anyone knows of a cheap software that would help me set this up.

What should this W-Site look like? I basically need something very simple:

portrait picture , autobiog, list of works, concerts, links, contact address, pdf images of score extracts, ... The general aesthetic (great word for a website!) being less-is-more. I'd prefer not to post up mp3's on there yet , & I definitely don't need video extracts. I imagine this wouldn't necessarily need Rapidweaver or the like to accomplish, and .Mac (...at 100$ per year ??? -need I say more)!

would really appreciate some advice , or even just plain knowledge/experience !

i'm not sure i understand your question. you want advice on just setting up a regular website? if you have php5 and mysql access (you don't need to know how to use them except in a very basic way) you can try using drupal ( http://drupal.org/ ) or you might like joomla, which i know less about.

Can I build a site with this- and put the pages on my own server, where I have a registered domain?
Or is this like the google blogs?
