hey so i finally have a playable instrument out of this stuff. i started out doing the 1 chip per module thing, but got super hung up on making the front panels all nice and am now concidering making multi chip tools into them instaid - more useful for that sort of expense. INSTAID! my old behringer eurocrap12 died, gifting me a terrific case and tons of pots/knobs/jacks. sanded the case, made the holes bigger and away i am

so what ive got so far:
8 oscs (40106)- 2 ultra high freq, 2 high freq, 2 low/mid freq, 2 ullltrraa low freq. coulda easily put range selector switches here, but they didnt fit comfortably within the UI. ive discovered that grabbing the caps makes cool sounds (pitch drop! all the way to total mute), so below each osc knob, ive got a 1 inch line of parallel copper exposed wire (thick, unbendy). its very expressive, light touch to mashing hard. one of the most useful things ive found!

2 sequencers (4051 multiplexers w/ dedicated 40106 osc each) - 8 knobs each, one @ high freq w/ the 40106 being run through the 4051, the other @ low/mid freq w/ the 4051 driving a vactrol (hand rolled) controlling the 40106.

each of the ABC ins on the 4051 are wired directly to banana jacks - NO PULL DOWN RESISTOR. THIS SOUNDS AWESOME. when you unplug something, it tweeks out not knowing if its high or low. seems to drain out after a couple of seconds. its so much fun to just play with the jack inputs. ive done the same on almost every input, except reset pins. those def need to be tied down.

1 XOR (4070) - total fun. makes boring on off predictable sequencing into semi predictable interesting patterns. the more the better. combine with AND gates turning signals on and off, and youve got some power. + it sounds really cool w/ the ultra high freq oscs.

1 AND (dont remember the chip off the top of my head) - super useful for switching

1 freq divider (4040) - 2 outs each for the 1st 2nd and 3rd sub octaves. i find myself taking a slow (rhythmic) XORed signal, running into the divider, and using the subs to control ANDs for other signals, all going into the ABC ins on the sequencers. once you hit a cirtain balance with it, it almost plays itself. awesome beats, bass drops, bursts of pure noise, weird fills. also - vactrol slow seq out into this thing, with the subs controlling the other seq = cool!

also 1 4-jack mult, and 2 3-jack mults

next im adding a 4 channel passive mixer and couple specific low low filters to round off the waves around 50hz and 100hz. i like the clickiness, but some smoother lows would be nice.

ill get some soundclips soon, my recording setup is torn down. this stuff is GREAT. ive already got some digital pots and a ton of 64bit duel shift regs. gonna make a ghetto digitally controlled digital delay! with 8 chips ill be able to record 1khz and below for 512ms! im keeping my eye out for longer registers, but this will work for now. also digitally controlled envelope gen. an A-S-D env should be easy. counters and crap.

banana jacks are so good. made 10 in like 2 minutes. jacks dont have to go all the way in to make a connection!

these are just the basics of basics, and its already fun, AND, surprizingly useful. a basic lowpass filter is in order, but its already sounding pretty damn awesome. played a show with it. got a great response.

thanks for the good ideas! ill be back w/ clips soon
