Hello,
i need to build an array of sample players, let's say 6.

they'll need to run without a computer and play, loop and possibly be interfaced with sensors and triggers

I was thinking that the best thing would be do get a programmable RAM playback board and dump the samples there

any idea / suggestion on boards and alternative solutions?

thanks

Wink

Hi aerogramma,

There are a bunch of examples of this for Arduino:

MP3 sample player: http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Main/VMUSIC
MP3 sample player: http://www.sport4minus.de/blog/?p=152
iPod control: http://www.jonasolson.se/content/arduino_tutorial/

Forum post on sampled audio: http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1202279613
Playground article on PCM sampled audio: http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Code/PCMAudio

ladyada's Wave Shield kit: http://www.ladyada.net/make/waveshield/index.html

The last one is probably the easiest/quickest way to go--just add sensors and your loop programming, and I think you've got what you want.

Thanks,

Ole

PostPosted: Sat Nov 08, 2008 8:25 am    Post subject: gating mp3 devices on any sound sources using arduino Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hello again,

I just got this idea of using arduino to gate the analog output of , for example, an mp3 players.
I was wondering if there's a fairly easy solution using simple VCAs and possibily a ADSR connected to the output of these sound players .
The reason i would like to use an ADSR is to have a smooth attack and release everytime i want to gate the sound the mp3 player.
I'm attaching a pict to show my idea. I hope it's clear enough. Smile

any advice is much appreciated..

You may want to take a peek at these very simple VCA's as described on Scott Stites "Birth of a Synth" web page. It is a Thomas Henry design that will get the job done with very little by way of parts:

http://mypeoplepc.com/members/scottnoanh/birthofasynth/id31.html

You could use one VCA for each channel of audio. Smooth gating can most likely be accomplished via a simple Attack/Decay circuit using a simple buffered Resistor/Capacitor combination. The buffered exponential capacitor voltage could then drive the VCA. This will be perfect as the VCA-1 responds linearly so driving it with an exponential voltage will be the best fit for the human ears perception to the changing volume level.

Hope this helps more Wink

Bill
