My KLEE is finished and mostly working. I have chased out a few wiring faults but one has me stumped. Confused

Pattern LED 14 lights up when I first press manual load whether the pattern switch is on or not. I can sometimes make it go off by cycling the switch and pressing manual load. Strangely, turning Stage 15 & 16 on then off seems to help. Mostly though LED 14 just stays on. Stage 3 LED sometimes does the same thing but nowhere near as often.
I suspect I have faulty 4034s. Does this sound right?
For the record, they are Motorola chips from Futurlec.

Any clues welcome. Thanks

This sure sounds like a creepy CD4034 problem. The word "strangely" tips me off. Laughing The fact that Stage 3 of the first CD4034 occasionally does the same thing makes it seem like the 4034's may not be right.

When the CD4034 loads, it "looks at" the voltages that are present on its parallel input pins. I've seen a CD4034 believe a parallel input is high, when, in fact, it was low.

There is an outside chance that an intermittent Switch 14 could be sending the wrong signal. Pin 21 of U7 is the input pin for pattern switch 14. You can probe pin 21 of U7 (CD4034) on the digital board and see if that pin goes high (close to positive rail) when switch 14 is flipped on and low (ground) when switch 14 is flipped off.

Also, make sure there is no excessive flux on the bottom of the digital board, which might have the potential to cause something like this happen.

Good luck and keep us updated on what you may or may not find.

Cheerios,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your post.

I checked Pin 21 and discovered that it stayed high even with the switch turned off. So obviously the switch is faulty after all (I thought I had tested it properly, but apparently not). The switch has now been replaced and all is good.

Thanks again for the direction. The support from this forum is fantastic, largely due to your input.

Cheers,

GraeT

Well, cool beans! Glad to see you don't have to get another CD4034. Some switches are kind of touchy about getting soldered. I remember one time soldering a switch, and the potting in the thing turned into soup and the actual lugs would move around. Needless to say, that switch was toast before it ever had a chance to do much.

How is bit 3 treating you?

Cheerios,
Scott

Bit 3 is behaving itself. No further trouble since I reterminated the wires.

I now have a calibrated and fully working KLEE. Now I am enjoying coming to grips with its many features!

Cheers,
