electrolytic capacitor orientation in discrete amplifiers |
 |
|
Hi there,
If you look at the electrolytic capacitor orientation of the output section of the monotribe
https://usermanual.wiki/Document/monotribesch.191226586/html
-or another example - the mic preamp from Rod Elliott esp found here
https://sound-au.com/project13.htm
-or altec 1592
https://sites.google.com/a/davidmorrin.com/www/home/trouble/transistors/amplifiers/altec-1592a
the capacitor at the input has the cathode towards the incoming signal rather than the other way around as I usually see on other similar circuits.
I was wondering if anyone knows the reason(s) for this?
and also could this be potentially damaging for a device that is connected to it? I'm curious because I have a phone who's audio output jack seems to have been fried and I'm wondering if it might have anything to do with plugging it in to the preamp circuit from ESP.
Thanks very much. |

I’d say that the monotribe example is backwards while the other two seems ok to me.
To determine how the orientation of the capacitors should be you have to figure out where the most positive voltage usually is and place them accordingly, where the + of the capacitors points towards the most positive voltage. _________________ my synth |

As for the esp is concerned, I once was at a talk from an Analog Design engineer and he stated that the best thing that could happen with an opamp when exposed to an esp is to break down immediately because especially opamps that are not esp safe will brake down eventually and usually at the most unconvinient moment... _________________ my synth |

Did you mean ESD .. I think that ESP in the OP was referring to this pre-amp :
https://sound-au.com/project13.htm
Anyway, it seems highly unlikely to me that connecting that pre-amp to a headphones output would blow up that output. _________________ Jan

I did like Extra Sensory Perception tho
(except when that would destroy electronics) _________________ Jan
