Subject description: waaht is the starting point ?

Hi, First of all, sorry for my English as it is not my mother language :=) ... Besides, I am even not sure to be in the right place to dicuss my point Smile

My son 17 yo son is very interested in building synth modules. Presently, he is playing a lot with automatonism soft but he wants to go on the harware side. I want to help him on this way but I do not know what is a good starting point. The only thing that is quite clear for me is that I prefer to start without arduino stuffs, just pure electronics. While not being an expert, I have some competencies in electronics. Also, the purpose is also not to buy almost ready made diy modules that you can find on the internet (your main work is then to solder components). I would be very happy if he gets a little bit of electronics understanding.

I thought about following tutorial that can be found on youtube, but things are quite upside down there. For instance, Moritz Klein's channel looks quite well done ... But still, it is hard to find how to go from the simplest circuit to more complicated ones progressively.

OF course, I am not talking about making nice modules at the beginning. I will start on breadboard and possibly then on stripboard.

So my question is simple : can someone help me in finding an efficient way to help my son ? (no problem if it is in English. I can translate)

thanx

The Synth DIY Wiki at https://sdiy.info/wiki/Main_Page is worth a look.

I maintain a page of synthesizer DIY information myself at https://northcoastsynthesis.com/synth-diy-projects/ . That is a commercial page - I sell kits for many of the projects listed there - but the documentation is detailed and may be of interest even if you're not buying my products.

I'm hoping to see more DIY discussions here on Electro-Music, but the "Look Mum No Computer" forum at https://lookmumnocomputer.discourse.group/ is a popular place for the sort of thing you're talking about.

There’s a YouTube series called Modular In A Week by Kristian Blasol. He has some pretty interesting info that might help…

I always suggest www.musicfromouterspace.com for newbie's because there are some projects for starters and they all come with explanations on how it all works. PCB's for the projects can you buy from www.soundtronics.co.uk or you can find layouts for veroboard/stripboard here in this forum.
