I am also using ichat (the Apple branded version of AIM ) and it works great both with audio only and audio/video ..
This one works great with iChat: http://www.apple.com/isight/
That said, is there any interest in an electro-music.com jabber server?
http://www.jabber.org/
It is compatible with clients for OS X, Windows and Linux. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

The interesting thing about these net based audio communication applications is that soon there'll be mobile phones that use wi-fi to access the internet. After that mobile phone calls will be free in many places as there'll be more and more wi-fi spots around. |

Yeah, as soon as things like WiMAX take hold, and are then improved, I'd imagine most comms moving to AoIP (Anything over IP) (I made that up).
Anyone want to start a "WiFone" company? Go to a Starbuck's hotspot and make worldwide phone calls. For Free. |

Jabber is pretty cool, but I'm not sure it really provides anything that you can't get using AIM. Maybe I'm wrong. Ist there anything I'm missing? Can Jabber handle audio sessions? _________________ --Howard

That's cool. When I worked for corporate America we were using Jabber as an internal AIM because we didn't want to go out beyond the firewall. For us, AIM seems to work quite well and we don't need to tie up our bandwidth with this service.
One feature that ytou can't get with AIM, as far as I'm aware, is group chat using audio. If we had that, we could have multi-party jam sessions. _________________ --Howard

You know, I would think *that* would be the next thing that would help bring this community together: online Jam sessions. If there are bandwidth problems, maybe just MIDI is a good start, especially considering that this is a large repository of G2 owners, thus, we have our own "General MIDI" standard of sounds via the .pch format. But weekly audio jam sessions would be *trés chic*. |

Isn't latency (compensation) a huge drawback of online audio jamming?
With latency ranging from 10ms to .5s depending on distance, network quality and whatnot that's a lot of music that can go awry.
I remember some MIDI-based jamming protocols that delayed everyone (!) by a bar so they always would be in sync, though off by a bar ...

True, latency makes true jamming almost impossible. YOu might might solve some of this by using midi and not audio, but that m,idi wouldn´t much sense anyway.. so.. no real solution yet .. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

KeyKit does exactly this. I'd like to explore using it somehow. But really, couldn't you see, aside from the chat room, some "jam rooms", that people could just connect to and start playing?
With MID though, and NM or G2s, it could work Or hell, this is experimental electro-music, so what if every player hears something different from the others? That could be half the challenge AND excitement! |

Absolutely. Well put. I'm all for it. If you'd like to work with TJT to organize that, I'll participate and help in any way I can. I think he may already have something running on his server. _________________ --Howard

I played with skype a little bit in the past. The voice communication worked pretty well, but another useful "feature" is that skype is not stereotypically firewalled on certain kinds of networks (unlike aim, msn, etc). This makes a great alternative to e-mail in needed contexts when also under obnoxiously silly network restrictions. |
