DIY electronic drum pads

I'm thinking about building a couple of electronic drum pads....I'm looking to make these things sturdy (obviously they are going to be hit a lot) but as inexpensively as possible. Has anybody had experience building these things they would care to share, or know of a good, inexpensive manufacturer of peizo transducers?

A few years back I made a heap of drum pads using Remo practice pads and piezo transducers. Don't know the make of the piezos, but they were the 'standard' type, maybe 4 cm in diameter. The piezos were placed under the skin, on top of the foam insert inside the pads. It worked quite well. On top of the skin, right above the piezos, small rubber foam pads were placed to protect the piezos from direct hits. The next pad project will be baed on neoprene mats, since they make a lot less acoustic noise when hit.

Of course one would need a trigger unit. I use an Alesis D4, highly recommended for the purpose. A friend of mine used a Roland Octapad for his pads.
