G2 Wiki Subject description: Yet another Nord Modular G2 site |
 |
|
I made a Nord Modular G2 Wiki site. It's currently in beta. My intended purpose for the site is to host articles on the art & science of making G2 patches along with screenshots, patches, and sounds attached. This Wiki is not meant to replace a discussion forum, but rather to bring some order to chaos when it comes to our collective knowledge. I used the same software as Wikipedia, so hopefully the editing interface will be familiar or at least intuitive. The only restriction is that you must register a username before you can create or edit articles. The easiest way to create a new article is to think of a title, use the search feature, and click "this exact title" on the results page-- that'll take you to the editor for your new article. I don't have any content on it at the moment, I'm hoping one of you will take the initiative.

Anyways, if you like the idea, please browse and contribute. If you don't like the idea, well, don't visit the site. |

Would you be willing to work with me to make the Wiki a part of this site? We might be able to get the usernames to use the same database entries. I've been planning to do this for a long time. _________________ --Howard

Actually yeah that sounds like fun, I'd be happy to volunteer any help you need. I personally don't mind where the wiki is, just as long as people really make use of it. |

I'm not sure how much it will be used, but it might be useful for explanations and tutorials. Wikis have a lot of potential.
UPDATE: Matt and I are going to work together to set up a wiki here. Hopefully it will be ready to go soon. There is a metawiki hack that allows the wiki to share usernames and passwords with the forum software. That way you won't need two accounts.
There is another wiki software platform, http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:dokuwiki , which has hacks to integrate with PHPBB. If anyone has any experience with DOKUWIKI and thinks this is a better choice than METAWIKI, please let us know.
If anyone else wishes to work on this project, or has any ideas about it, please post here.
Thanks... _________________ --Howard

Hey rhombus and Mosc,
the G2-Toolbox is a WIKI, too. Can't open your site right now, rhombus, but since we're having three WIKIs maybe we should put everything together.
I started to work this forum backwards and integrated the things I thought were interesting in the G2-Toolbox up to July 2004. Maybe we don't have to do all the work three times.
Best,

Cool, Sebber. It would be great to get all this stuff unified; at least on one site. The Wiki might be good for stuff like DIY synths, compostion, music and who knows what else. _________________ --Howard

I'll see about that, but meanwhile IMHO it's a great idea to have a (G2 and/or otherwise) wiki here. A forum is not really suitable to hold knowledge, erm ... to find it is the problem of course :-)
Sofar I've se only one issue with the wikipedia software, it could use some fuzzy searching. It now has a a hard time finding things not correctly spelled. _________________ Jan

Well chances are as I start working with the wiki site, I'll write up some guidelines for editing that should ensure effective searching, proper categorization, and extensive cross-referencing. Yes, having moderators dedicated to cleanup will help but when it comes to wikis in general everyone is responsible for making corrections such as spelling to any article that needs it. Even if you require that all edits are done by registered users, there still is no concept of personal ownership over articles. Every user, regardless of how they use the wiki, is responsible for the overall quality, it's up to the individual how much they contribute.
After spending some months on the electro-music.com forums, I'm very confident that the community will be able to maintain a high level of quality on the wiki. |

I could see the wiki as a useful combination of the manual, G2 FAQ, and patch archive link relative to the prior two topics. The manual for the editor is good, but it is lacking the ability to click on an example patch and open it in the editor for experimentation. Sometimes there are a few weird quirks about a module or group that is documented in the G2 FAQ (the sequencer modules come to mind) but not necessarily in the fullest detail within the manual.
Putting manual info, essential info from the G2 FAQ forum, and example patches from the patch archive into related wiki articles would make some quick, detailed reference that involves minimal searching. |

We had one set up to evaluate but it got blown away by accident.
We are trying to decide what the best WIKI to use is. We have been considering Metawike and Joomla. Working on electro-music 2006 has diverted some of my time. _________________ --Howard
