Wondering if any max whizzes could explain something to me in terms that the average sofa could understand... Hmm... well the average sofa wouldn't be capable of any max I am sure, maybe those high tech ones... but anywho... back to the point here... Serial Ports. I understand how to encorporate serial ports with a compatable serial device... however can somebody explain to me how the serial port relay voltages to max? would it be possible to recognize trigger voltages through the serial port and assign different samples to them (I know how to do the sampling stuff.... but the serial port stuff... hmm I know jack shit... so it would be greatly appreciated if somebody could explain this to me in terms I might understand. Thanks |

Hi flowersniffer7,
and welcome to electro-music.com!
If I get your question right, then no, you can't normally detect trigger voltages with a serial port (actually it's possible with some kinds of serial port flow control signals, but that's a bit of a stretch and not a common thing to do). There are several trigger-to-MIDI devices on the market that could help you with triggering samples from a variety of trigger sources.
For Max/MSP info, head over to our Max/MSP forum.

I can't answer your question and I've never worked with it but you'll need to check the [serial] object.
More info on it is in the max reference manual page 529, and you should check it's help file.
hope this helps, good luck! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

yeah, been through all that a couple times... not working for this... but thanks
Also: to Dr. Justice... Thanks, I was trying to avoid buying where I could possibly make, but I guess the easiest/cheapest way would be to buy one of those yamaha drum pad things with midi capabilities and throw on my own RCA jacks for the triggers I built |
