I am building a lot modules for my "dream synthesizer" (long story) including a Frequency Shifter (thanks JH for the design and PCB's and Tobias for the parts kit) and want to do this stuff right.

It's been a long time since I did any serious soldering and have been reading about the latest techniques and tools. But I remain confused. I read a great explanation of why one removs the flux in a different forum but it didn't address choosing a solder/flux combinaiton to begin with.

So,

Flux type:
rosin?
water soluble?
no clean?

Composition:
tin/lead?
lead free?

I just bought a copule of rolls of Kester 245 tin/lead, no clean. I figure I have to use it on non-sealed pots, trimmers, etc. why not the whole board? Really though... why not use it on the whole board?

Thanks,
David

Why don't you just post this in the main DIY forum instead of multiple sub-forums?

I posted in two sub groups because I had purchased kits from these two designers and I thought it would be the most appropriate way to ask since I am building their kits. I apologize if it was bad "netiquette".

On topic though, since you took the time to ask about why I posted the way I did, do you have any suggestion regarding the best solder to use?

David

No problem posting here, though I think I can't contribute a lot. Whatever solder you feel comfortable with, and which is intended for soldering electronics, will probably work with my PCBs.

Personally I choose my solder for what I consider a good smell, something that won't cause me headaches (I had such a solder once), and which doesn't leave too much black stuff on the tip of the soldering iron.

Other than that, I'll have blood test made soon, to learn if my body has accumulated too much lead over the years or not. Smile

(What I'm using now is Sn60 Pb38 Cu2)

JH.

Thanks for the feedback JH.

Most of the advice I've received is that the no-clean tin/lead works great.

Oh, the Kester 245 hasn't given me a headache yet Smile
