Noodle gallery at electro-music 2005 |
 |
|
What do you think of having a noodle gallery and some talks dedicated to noodles at the electro-music 2005 event? I'm thinking maybe we could set up a G2 with a small stereo sound system in a gallery or something and let it run continuously. People could submit noodles, or we could just play the ones in the G2 patch archives.
It would be nice to spread the word about noodles to the non-NM world. _________________ --Howard

I like this. If there is only one exhibit of the NM (and I hope there'd be at least one) this should be it. It would demonstrate the true power of the synth in performance mode and provide some concepts for anyone using a modular synth modeler (or a modular synth for that matter.) A computer screen hooked up to the G2 would be great as well, giving non NM users a glimpse of the editor's potential and the full dimensions of what goes into (and comes out of) a noodle.
Perhaps people with special, multi G2 engine rigs that might be coming over could show the noodle potential of their set up too. This provides something extra and unseen for most single G2 owners as well. |

I haven't seen any noodles at all on Reaktor (other than some simple one's I've built). To diversify the noodle concept to other platform users, I'd be willing to get a hold of a laptop and build a few sophisticated noodles in Reaktor. It would be great if other Reaktor users here could contribute to this exhibit idea too. |

Sounds like Jan's Nord radio...though in this case it's more like a Nord-blaster. Maybe he has some utilities to make this easy to automatically queue up patches? |

I do have some software indeed ... some info:
Noodles can be posted from a web browser and will be scheduled by the system to be played for a certain amount of time. The audio output could be streamed out over the internet (I have had this working on my 'home-net').
Some information about the noodles is present in the web interface so people can see what is currently playing, what will be played next and what has been playing. When noodle contrbuters checked the download option it's also possible for people to download the patches.
Unfortumately Clavia changed the MIDI sysex dumps a bit since I made it and so that part needs some work again.
I would really love this system to be present at the 2005 event, I'll devote some time to it again. That is, assuming there is in the building the possibility to connect to the internet at a reasonable bit rate.
This web based system does some basic checks on the file header to see whether patches could be valid G2 performances with the right version numbers. The G2 itself will simply not load invalid patches, without any other feedback than not playing them. So I would like to enhance the sysstem with a silence detector that fires the schedular when the system goes silent for something like 30 seconds or so.
This software uses a MySQL database to store it''s information, some simple PHP work to generate web pages from that and to accept incoming patches and an Apache webserver to glue things together.
The schedular/loader is a Delphi program that iterates over the database to see what has to be played. The patch to be played is converted from patch format into MIDI sysex format and sent out over TCP/IP to another Delphi program that makes the MIDI connection to the synth. The Delphi software needs Windows to run on.
For audio streaming I used a plugin for Winamp, which can serve a single stream only I think. So a distributing system would be needed to allow for multiple simultaneous connections - but I can't say anything sensible about that part. I'd have to check whether the plugin still works on the latest Winamp version.
Alternatively, it's possible to load up a bunch of performances into a G2 and use another one to select performances at random from the first one. This is something I made for a performance last summer. Such a system would have to be set up in advance of the festival though.
Both systems are 'performance only', so contributers would have to convert single patches into performances first.
Attached are some pics of the alternative system.

Unfortunately, there is not broadband internet connection at the CAC, only dialup. I'm going to contact the local cable company and see if they would be willing to contribute to the cause by wireing up the center so we can do this kind of stuff. People will want to check their email too, and we would like to do some streaming of the events.
The Noodle Radio system would be great - requires no connections to the internet. I don't know if it is rugged enough to bring over on an airplane though. _________________ --Howard

Apart from that, the $7 speaker system it uses is fine for me, but it wouldn't be for others I'm sure :-).
And then there is this 110 Volt issue as well, the G2's can be switched with some effort but the rest can't .
But it's just to give an idea of what would be possible, with just a little work something more usable for the event could be made. Probably using a regular audio system and just a little box in order to get a minimal user interface like the radio has. One knob for volume and another one for patch selection - the custom controller I built ffor that is very small (the PCB with the large black chip on it in the rear view)

I'd love to hear surround sound noodles! _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------
