I am making a sequencer using a 4029 and 4514. I am having some trouble testing it on breadboard. My board is old and stuff works when i press it in and hold it, but stops when i let go. This is making it difficult to test, so i figured i will just go ahead and solder it up the way it 'should' work. But i have two questions:

1. Do i want the 4029 to run in binary or decimal mode?

2. What do i connect to the Strobe pin on the 4514? I have no idea what that pin does.

Judging from the decoder your using, the binary mode would be your choice.
Decade mode will just count to 9 and recycle to 0.

This is a level triggered LATCH enable pin and the decoder will hold the last decoded outputs when held at a logic low. Just tie it high and the device will decode the inputs and transfer to the outputs immediately.

Hope this helps you.

Hi. I do have another question. Should all the jam inputs, carry in clock, and carry out clock be grounded on the 4029?

carry out can be left unattached
carry in to ground
jam inputs to ground, then you can use pin 1 (PreEn) as a reset input
or you can set the Jam inputs to do something else and get some really interesting things to happen.
