Here's a new feature nobody probably needs, but I put it in anyway. I apologize in advance for not working on more important things.

Anyway, now when you type electro-music.com or electro-music 2005 in a post, it will automatically get formated as bold, italic and electro-blue. This will be retroactive for all posts on the forum if they are edited. Please let me know if you find a case in a post where this doesn't happen. Not that I would fix it, but I'm curious. I know it doesn't work in subject fields - that's OK with me. Very Happy

Oh, the beauty of PHP... Cool

It's fun, it works (aparently) and I respect and understand your enjoyment, but is this actually a improvement? You see, I think this might make scanning pages quickly for information harder because it draws the eye yet does not realy signify any information. I do suppose that writing out those words in full is rather rare and "EM" gets used more frequently so it's not a big deal. Cool trick anyway.

One thing I've been thinking about for if and when we would make those more elaborate profiles is automatically linking all instances of user names to their profile. That way when somebody get's mentioned you could quickly look up who he is and what he does. I would, in that case, advocate keeping such links in the same font and colour as the general text to keep pages easy on the eye and only use a underline.

I'd be a bit affraid to putting too much fanciness in. Checking every word in a post to see if it is a username might be a bit of a load on the posting time which is already too slow. It's an N*N algorithm. 200 words in the post * 2000 usernames is 400000 string compares. Maybe no big deal, but it could mount up. Smile Good idea though. Keep em coming.

Hmmmm, surely another, more efficient sorting algorithem can be found or cooked up. Also; it need not be real time. The server could keep a log of what has been checked and only do this in spare cycles. Far more problematic would be figuring out the context of words to avoid people taking common words as logins and so getting a undue share of publicity.

Perhaps this idea wasn't so good after all....

I am still thinking about the gearlists and such. That is however something we might continue to discuss in the editors forum. BTW.. Howard.. did you see the mambo/phpBB integration stuff?

Indeed very cool Mosc :) How about the abbreviation too? (EM or E-M?)

Just one thing I've been missing sometimes. Could the name of the member on the upper left corner of each post be a link to their user profile?

there is a little problem - if you want to ad link to EM forum pages

for example like this :
[url=http:/ /electro-music.com/forum/topic-7535.html] link to another topic[/url]

it gets all messed up Sad

or is there any options to avoid this ?

other ways i think its just a cool option

That URL bug is fixed now, sorry.

EM could stand for something other than electro-music.com. One fellow has a thing called EMC radio that is not associated with electro-music.com at all, other than informally.

It's not part of the post's text.

Sigs stay "liquid", they are added to a post but if you later change your sig then all your old posts will also have the new sig.

Yes, any messed up posts need to be edited and cleaned up.

Why your sig didn't get messed up and Carlo's did? I might suggest Carlo edited his after I make the mod and you didn't. My mod actually modifies the post by putting in the BBCODE when it is submitted or edited. Maybe there is a better place to put it, but I haven't found it.

So this was hardcoded .. as seen in the code example above.. and not parsed together on the fly?

I'm not sure I understand this question. Whatever you call it, it is two lines added to the regular phpbb code. Very simple actually. It actually sees these stringes and puts in the BBCODE in your post. Then that BBCODE becomes a permanent part of the post. There may be a better way to do that, but I didn't want to make a major project of it. As it is, we've spent more time talking about it than it took to do it.

I see. I did some similar formatting stuff way back when I used webdna. then I made a system for not changing the content in the database.. but instead parsing together the html on the fly with all the formatting.. you know.. no permanent edits.

Oh.

I've actually never noticed those buttons... And they've always been there. Boy, do I feel stupid now!

I'm sorry. I'll go to my room.
