New Member - My first Question Subject description: Introduction and a couple of questions... |
 |

Hi,
I'm new around here, and almost certain to get a Nord Modular G2 Engine in the very near future.
I owned the original Modular a few years ago, and the lure of the G2 is drawing me back to the fold.
Another big plus for the G2, is the existence of this board, which all points to a healthy user base and a great environment for users to share information. Perhaps you could enlighten me on the following!...
I've been playing around with the Demo and I did have a question that had been driving me nuts, however, I've just RTFM, and the answer was revealed to me.
Some of the demo patches from the NL2 & NL3 that come with the demo software came with portamento enabled, but I couldn't, for the life of me, work out how it was being applied.
In an attempt to isolate this, I "Stripped down" an example patch to the bare essentials in order to post it here for some kind soul to dissect it, & tell me where the mystery portamento was coming from.
I now realise that it was due to the patch settings dialog box - neat! Now I know it's there, I'll make use of that, as I imagine it saves dsp by not having to assign an LFO for Vibrato, or a Glide module for portamento.
OK - now I've confessed to spending ages trying to work this one out , I'd be grateful if you could answer the following which I can't figure out from the manual...
On the G2 engine, is there an easy way to select patch variations over midi, without having the editor running? Is there a keyboard command to step through them when the editor is running?
I presume you are all running the 1.4 editor without problems? Whenever I quit the demo software, it locks up. It behaves itself perfectly during operation, but refuses to quit gracefully.
Well, those are my questions for now, though I'm sure there may well be a few more when I get my G2.
Thanks in advance

CC 70, which is Midi Continues Controller 70, selects variations. Probably you can set a master keyboard to send CCs. Sending 0 to cc700 selects variation 1, sending 8 or 16 (I always forget) selects 2, etc.

It doesn't crash here on quitting. Maybe an issue with audio drivers, did you try selecting another sound card ? _________________ Jan

Thanks for the speedy reply!
I should be able to set up CCs no problem.
I'll play around with the soundcard settings until my G2 arrives!
Thanks for your help

Hi Steve,
Quote: | I presume you are all running the 1.4 editor without problems? Whenever I quit the demo software, it locks up. | I was running the 1.4 editor for several weeks and never ever experienced problems on shut down (Win 98SE). So I guess it has something to do with you PC setup. Hard to tell the cause, there are virtually unlimited possibilities, like drivers, TRS processes...

When the editor is running, number keys 1-8 select the variations. |

Thanks for that Northstar.
g2ian: It just had to be something as simple as that!
I tried the arrow keys, +/-, Tab - but missed the obvious!
Thanks guys. |

Quick reply, ah well, was hanging in front of the media center anyway, making a noodle for the G2, meanwhile browsing around a bit.
When the CC thing wouldn't work out .. on the "real" G2 you'd always be able to map keyboard keys to CC changes.
And about the hidden features you discovered (glide & arpeggiator and stuff), the synth settings dialog has some hidden features as well. Probalbly not for the demo version, but you'll want to check 'm, once having the engine, before sending in MIDI from the outer world. _________________ Jan

Well, my G2 Engine has arrived (expanded), and everything installed without a hitch.
The OS upgrade to 1.4 - no problem, and the software quits as I would expect.
Thanks again for your help - I'm off to lock myself away for a few days and get patching! |
