| Quote: | The Academy-Award® nominated animated short-film tells the story of a lonely inventor, whose colorless existence is brightened only by dreams of the carefree bliss of his youth.
By day, he is trapped in a dehumanizing job in a joyless world. But by night, he tinkers away on a visionary invention, desperate to translate his inspiration into something meaningful.
When his invention is complete, it will change the way people see the world. But he will find that success comes at a high price, as it changes himself, as well. |
This story reminds me of something I have read on this forum about one of us. Am I right _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Wow ! Thats a cool little movie ! The eyes tell the whole story. I wonder what the light from the stomach means.. is it the fire in the belly ? The last scene is intriguing (I can't spell, sorry) ... the fire is quenched when you've accomplished what you set out to do ? Or is it that acheivement is just an escape ? Build a super spring to jump out of one pit to promptly land in another vaccuous pit. I also like the constant allusion to childhood. Do we learn (I'd say unlearn) way too much growing up and imprison ourselves in rigid social norms/rituals ?
Here's stretching it way too far : All the greatest inventions/works of art are produced by social misfits. If life is to live 50% within yourself and 50% with people around you, the greatest creative geniuses have been the ones stuck way too much within themselves. Some perhaps learn to step out and becom normal (with fame/enlightenment/girlfriends/boyfriends) and some others don't. If one is searching for fulfillment entirely within oneself, there will never be an answer...just jumping from pit to pit (like the guy in the movie... I'm thinking so cus he's shown lonely all the time) The same applies to seeking completeness entirely in social relationships (which unfortunately seems the American way of life, from my observations)
Lemme end with a prayer for the puppet guy, so he finds his peace in life

| A beautiful little movie to be sure. It seems a bit pessimistic to me, but I believe that after we achieve something we have been striving for there is always a period of disappointment or depression. Post-partum depression is well known. Similarly, there is true joy when we see a new possibility for our lives; when we get on track for something we want or think we need. |

What I take away from it is that in order to achieve his dream, he sacraficed too much of himself, and would up loosing the thing that made him unique. He became the same form of oppression that he sought to free himself from, and in the end, realizes that no matter what he does, no matter what he achieves, he will never again regain the free joy he remembers from childhood.
There are of course the elements of commercialism and escapism and things can be said to those ends, but for me, the above is what I carry away from it. And it's presented in such a short tight period of time. A highly efficient work of art. _________________ ∆ Cyx ∆
