Broke a personal rule yesterday and bought a Minotaur Shock record ((it's called "maritime") based solely on the cover and fact that it was published by 4AD. Turned out pretty good - some woodwind (I love woodwind, as in Steve Reich stuff or Silence Surmire or that proper last track on Björk's Debut (no, not that horrible James Bond monstrosity)) and pleasant electronica. Something for the headphones in upcoming spring evenings at work.

Fennesz Black Sea is another recent purchase. I'm more a curious onlooker than a big fan of the noise stuff that he does, but I like what he does with his guitar.

I've forgot to report here for a while, so here are a few of the last ones Embarassed

A bit of remastered Rush, some Buckethead, Thanatopsis and Praxis CDs. Buckethead is so much fun, and I love how the reactionary rock guitar establishment get seizures over him Smile

DrJ, being a sort of fringe member of the "Rock Guitar Establishment" I know what you mean - there are so many snobs out there who only think in tiny boxes, and anything outside those boxes are to be sneered at. Hence my - at best - fringe affiliation with the Rock Guitar Establishment. I don't particularly like him (Buckethead), like I don't really get off on Snakefinger, Frank Zappa or, say, Glenn Branca, but I'm sure glad that their music is out there to confront and scare us. There is, however, NO excuse for Yngve Malmsteen, a man whose fast fingers would have been far better employed picking berries or something. Cool

Ain't that the truth. It's slightly appalling to find that 98.72% of the guitar fora crowd are music- and gear- wise ultra conservative. I thought they were supposed to be the rebels Laughing

Although Mr. Malmsteen does nothing for me, surely there's a place for him too in a strawberry field somewhere...

I think Yngwie is a source of great humour. Have you heard this?

Great Connection by Oscar Peterson

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

I had had this album a long time ago on a tape (copied from a friend of mine)
Some years ago I had found it on a used LP but I don't have a turntable handy. I finally found it on CD

Oscar Peterson is so f**king groovy it's unbelievable Exclamation and what about NHOP and Louis Hayes Question

an unbeatable CD for jazz lovers Very Happy

A few weeks ago I was at a Goodwill store. I got a 10 record set entitled Phillco presents the best of Command Records. 1961. One of the many records introducing the concept of stereo.

There was a misplaced album in the set. A mint copy of The Beatles Second Album, mono. too much coffee

If anyone has a spare cover for this one, let me know.

There were some albums I wanted that I couldn't find on Spotify, plus I had a nice round to my favourite CD store. The roundup the last couple of weeks:

Jim O'Rourke: The Visitor - a one track instrumental album. I'm becoming a real fan of O'Rourke. The liner notes says "Please listen on speakers, loud", which made the gentle and understated acoustic a bit surprising. It's closer to Mike Oldfield than Sonic Youth. You need to follow his advice though, since this is one of the most dynamic records I've heard. I really like it! Also got me thinking about how long ago it was since I saw a commercial one track instrumental album.

Amy X Neuburg: Songs 91 to 85. A nice album. It's interesting to hear how the oldest stuff sounds closer than the later to what she did on Residue.

Here We Go Magic. An album by Luke Temple, who I hadn't listened to before but who apparently made a shift from folk to more experimental stuff. Very nice as it turned out.

Tortoise: Beacons of Ancestorship. I'm a huge fan of early Tortoise, but missed checking out the previous album. This is interesting enough, though I feel they're starting to crank up levels on effect units where they used to just crank up their creativity.

Prefab Sprout: Let's Change the World With Music. Lots have been written about this in magazines and stuff. It's as enjoyable as other late Prefab albums I think - there is something about MacAloons's lyrics that always starts my brain up.

Bike for Three!: More Heart Than Brains. Buck 65 in collaboration with some guy. Unmistakenly Buck 65 (which I like), but with a more techno flair.

Cass McCombs: Dropping the Writ. I've listened to this loads on Spotify, but I felt I wanted to buy it because it is a great record - though not electronic music.

/Stefan
