I don't want to sound disappointing to those enjoying their "telephones" for anything besides dialing telephone numbers but the problem remains the same: the user interface is hardly convincing for musical applications.
I'm not so sure. The i products are more than touch sensitive, they have built in accelerometers. Great for adding vibrato, tremolo or anything else you can think of. In the ocarina app. The built in mic is used as a breath controller.
Think of it as a kaos pad with a GPS, web browser, calorie counter, synthesizer, camera, voice recorder, game player, music player, note taker, stock tracker, star finder, weight watcher, restaurant finder, irc client, computer terminal, spectrum analyzer, SPL meter, carpenter's level, and much more. For a monthly fee, it is also a telephone, but that's optional.
The new 3.0 OS will have stereo bluetooth, you one can have great cordless audio too.

Editor's note: This topic has become a long list of applications. It's not the best way to present this information, so I have started several new topics about the individual apps posted here. I split out a post by Alexander, and unfortunately, because of limitations of the forum admin software, I was unable to leave it here. The link to the new topic is:
It's about the noise.io synthesizer, which looks quite nice to me. Thanks Alexander, and sorry for having to make such an obtrusive edit. _________________ --Howard
my music and other stuff
maybe I am not making myself clear but I do not share all this enthusiasm about playing music with a telephone.
I apologize if my remarks sound like trolling...anyway what kind of bloody music are you supposed to come up with using such a regrettable interface? can you play Donna Lee by Charlie Parker on the iPhone?
I don't think so prove me wrong and I will surrender

THE TOUCH IS GREAT
as a sound artist who's been hugely against technology for many years, i was suprised at the possiblilities that the ipod touch has to offer. i'm making great music with the different apps that they have to offer. plus its just the beginning of it and i cant wait to see what happens when the programmers and device catch up to each other.
plus there is possibilities of custom music apps. i'm actually in the process of working with a company on one right now for an upcoming sound installation here in billings montana based on the ipod touch and immediatism.
they are self contained devices with many options. in the next coming weeks i'll be posting graphic scores composed on them. and music composed solely with them.

Rich people...
The last company I was working for (just b4 the arseholes fired me) asked me if I wanted a phone- and offered to go 50/50 on whatever phone I wanted. Naturally I went for the iPhone. But then they fired me, and have left me with an 18 month contract to fullfill and an expensive phone that I hardly use. But hey, what a great little gadget!
Is it worth it? Well to be honest I don't really give a stuff for the phone, I just wish apple would bring out a multicore touch tablet based on the same technology- then I would ditch both my Mac and my iPhone!

Carlo, think of the sensors in the device as being crude and limited forms of a stringed instrument. As sensor tech improves you'll be able to play such devices with all the expressiveness of a true instrument. It's just kind of crude at the moment for your refined taste...
And we all know you have the taste of a true artiste... I mean that sincerely. _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz

the iPhone is cool but I tend to prefer specialized tools for specific applications not end-of-world gizmos doing everything. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube
