About "About this forum" |

Dear moderator,
A few thoughts :
Sometiimes this forum is unbearable slow...these days people surf the net very fast, it would be a pitty missing interesting people due to this slowness.
Is it not possible to make the forum more accessable by reducing the different topics? There are, IMHO, way too much different categories.
Hope I could help.
All the best! |

I moved this post from Introduce Yourself to this forum.
Thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry you are finding the site slow. I appreciate that you have taken the time to write this. It shows you value what we have
Where are you located and what kind of network connection are you using? I'm not suggesting the problems are on your end, I'm just curious.
Just to clairify, are you saying the forum is slow because it is not responding quickly enough (like an overloade server or network), or are you saying the forums are too cluttered and difficult to navigate? _________________ --Howard

Hi mosc,
1. I have ADSL 3.3Mbps. No, it's just that sometimes the forum is really slow. (technically speaking) This gives, at first sight, a bad impression.
2. There are also a lot of topics. The fact that I posted my message in the wrong topic....
Quote: | News...
News about this site and the scene.
Subforums:
Gear News
Concerts and Festivals
Conferences and Journals
New Releases
Apple Computers
Miscellaneous NewsReviews
Commentary and Editorials
How-tos
etc..etc... |
I am a software developer myself, trying to be as "ordered" as possible, but, I think, if you could group some items together it will be clearer.
For example : NEWS : why not put everything into 1 or 2 baskets? Then also, the "last post"-column will be more up-to-date, which gives the impression that the forum is very alive.
The same for Reviews/Commentary...

I see your point. It isn´t easy to set up forums like this. Personally I think we have managed it quite well all things considered.
Another thing is how the forum software shows activity and how informative the software interface really is. Subforums makes a lot of sense taking into consideration that we have discussed piping some subforums to the front page "newspaper" style. This would create a more dynamic front page for the site, but we aren´t quite there yet.
When it comes to speed of the site, I guess that can vary depending a lot on your connection and ISP. ISPs don´t handle various routes consistently and this site seems to suffer from some bad routes to some networks. I am seeing this problem daily and not just with this site. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

To be sure, my hosting site has been having some real difficulties lately. I've seen slow performance and even a couple of outages in the last week or so. There are many issues that they face as they grow. I'd like to move to a better hosting service, but there are costs involved. Things have seemed to improved in the last few days, for me at least.
Elektro80 is right about the network routes. There's not much we can do about that without a lot of expense, like installing mirrored servers. The forum software itself is based on a database, which is my opinion is very overated. Still, it has lots of advantages over flat files - speed isn't one of them though.
As for the organization, it's a double edged sword. We created all of the subtopics because we felt we needed them to sort things out. A downside it the moderators are frequently moving topics to a more appropriate place, but that is easy to do and it helps keep things organized. We always indicate what we have done, and this communicates the method to our maddness. One thing I'd like to add is a feature to view new post only in specific areas, like the Clavia forums, News, Online Music, Artists, etc. That way, people only interested in one or a few forum categories could keep up with the site using tools focused on just those forums. _________________ --Howard
