Solved:Just got my G2 today = "Cannot install this hardware" |
 |
|
Just got my G2, been at it all morning but can't seem to get the USB drivers installed on XP SP3.
I keep getting the error:
Cannot install this hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware:
The system cannot find the file specified
The G2 firmware is V 1.40
I've tried to install the 2.16 & the 1.0 drivers, but in both cases my computer hangs and I have to manually reboot.
The Modular editor installs without a hitch, both 1.62 and 1.40, but neither (obviously) are able to connect to the G2.
I've followed the installation .PDF, cleaned every mention of "clavia" from my registry, manually installed the drivers, and tried everything else I could find associated with this type of error.
Anyone have any tips?
Update:
I was able to update the G2 to 1.62with the OSX version of the Modular Editor. I rebooted into XP (my main OS - it's a dual boot MacBook Pro) but, alas, nothing... Last edited by jeswa on Mon Jun 07, 2010 9:01 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Is there any reason you don't want to run it in OSX? I've never had a problem/hangups when running my G2 Engine from OSX.
BTW, longtime fan of the whole Schematic crew. Haven't bought the new Phoenecia album yet, but I've got to ask; were one of you guys from South Jersey? The Echelon Mall is place I used to spend my youth hanging out and skateboarding. Just curious... _________________ Macbook 2.4 Unibody/Nord G2 Engine/9u of Euro Modules/Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1UW/NI Maschine/Novation Remote Zero SL MKII/ |

Let's try some obvious things first.
Be sure you have the right driver, which you can find at this link.
If you're worried about installing drivers recommended by strangers, you can verify for yourself that the link leads to the nordkeyboards.com domain.
The link leads to a zip file; save it somewhere, right-click its icon, and select "Extract all."
This should (after answering a few more questions) give you a folder.
Next, right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties." In the resulting "System Properties" window, select the "Hardware" tab and then click "Device Manager." Expand the resulting window so that you can see all the top-level devices. Open the "Sound, video, and game controllers."
What do you see? In particular, (1) Do you see anything with a question mark next to it? (2) Do you see an entry named "Clavia 32-bit USB driver?" (3) Does anything change when you connect or disconnect your G2?
If you connect your G2 and on the "Action" menu at the top, select "Scan for hardware changes," what happens? |

Thanks for your suggestions...
I have been using Device Manager for all of my driver update attempts. Those are the exact drivers I've been using, but just for good measure, I've re-downloaded them (3 times now) and used the new ones.
Under Sound, video and game controllers appears:
"Nord Modular G2" preceded by an exclamation point ! in a yellow circle (no question mark though)
When I dosconnect it, it simply disappears and reappears (with the !) when I reconnect.
I attempted to install the USB drivers on my Acer netbook and got the same issue. I'm guessing that it's a software conflict.
The netbook & Macbook Pro XP partition are set up similarly, lots of the same software & drivers.
Again, I did get it working flawlessly with OS X, so I know it's not the G2
expermusic...
Thank you I lived in Voorhees until I was 7, my mom used to leave me to play near this waterfall behind escalators, there was this looping harp music playing from somewhere behind the waterfall. I loved that spot, definitely a formative musical experience for me. Surprisingly I haven't heard anything from Sean Portnoy of Grooves Magazine, he's from Voorhees too. |

You could try removing all reference to the G2, uninstall everything you can find on the pc, then just disconnect every bit of USB struff you've got and reboot your pc before trying again.. it sounds like something is conflicting with it like you say, so perhaps disconnecting as much of your usb-age before starting might be a good idea. _________________ iP (Ross)

I doubt that's necessary. I am guessing it will be sufficient to right-click the errant driver, select "Update", and then go through the correct steps to point the update process at the correct driver. There are a few places where it is easy to go wrong along the way, but if you avoid those pitfalls, I think it should be possible to get the right driver in place without even rebooting. |

Sorry maybe my note wasn't clear, I was just suggesting to remove the G2 related drivers (not to uninstall every bit of software!! lol) and what not, before rebooting with no usb devices connected. Then try and install the G2 drivers and unit. My usb TM1 for connecting to the MD can send my other devices funny, sometimes. I just figured given he has no problems with the mac perhaps it is due to different devices being connected. _________________ iP (Ross)

I still don't thing it's necessary. He has identified a driver (which shows up with an ! in the device manager) that goes away when he disconnects the G2 and comes back when he reconnects it. That means he has identified the driver associated with the G2 hardware.
I think (but admittedly I am not completely certain) that if you right-click that driver and select "Update..." and then point the updater at the correct driver, saying that you do not want it to search but rather to install the specific driver you have supplied, that all will be well. Moreover, if it is, it will be by far the easiest way to arrange for all to be well.
If he uninstalls the G2-related drivers, reboots the machine, and then reconnects the G2, the operating system may automatically install the wrong driver again. |

Agreed, I see what you mean.. I was thinking that the drivers weren't working even after he had installed them properly and hence me thinking it may be a hardware confusion/conflict of some sort.
IMO Usb can be a total nightmare if the devices dont all get along.. even though they aren't supposed to have any impact on each other they certainly do in my studio.. That said the G2 is usually better behaved than most of the others, the wifi hub and the Tm1 being the most likely to cause problems. _________________ iP (Ross)

Thanks fellas, regardless, this is a weird one...
Every time I right-click on the device and choose update - whether I let Windows search, Choose a location, or choose "Don't Search" & "Have Disk", as soon as it begins to load the drivers, the progress bar jumps immediately to 100% (the transferring file animation continues to move) and the computer becomes unstable, I can't open any other windows - including Task Manager or Process Explorer, and I eventually have to restart.
Going to try it on a normal PC at a friends house and I'll report back.
Thanks... |

Hm. I wonder if you tried to install a 64-bit version by mistake or something. I might try right-clicking it, selecting "uninstall", then "scan for new hardware" and telling it about the correct driver. |

Thanks Ark...
I was sure to only install the 32 bit driver.
I tried installing the drivers on another PC and had no problems whatsoever, so I've narrowed down to a conflict of some sort of with another installed driver. I suppose I need to start isolating drivers and services, and see which ones get along and which don't. Thanks so far for your help... |

Have you tried right-clicking it, selecting "uninstall," then "scan for new hardware?" If so, what happens? |

Thanks Ark & everyone else. I found my solution here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/post-298102.html#298102
I mentioned that I did try to install in safe mode, but the trick is keeping the G2 plugged into the same USB port you used durung the safe mode installation. Hopefully I'll be able to use a different port later. |
