You managed to kill the sedums Shocked

My grandad had the roof tiled with concrete tiles .. sedums grew on that without any attention [that i know of .. but i was 7 or so when he died]

My mom has sedums in pots - and those actually do get watered in summer .. and they do need that .. they will also collect grasses, mini peppermint [corsican - which is really lovely btw with the super tiny pink flowers] - and some other stuff in those pots .. not handy .. on the roof there would only be moss.

well yes, of course I did and I'll do it again.

If you can have them out in the open they'll grow a lot better. Sun, rain, wind, snow they seem to like it all.
The sempervivums that are growing in the gutter planter on the railing are starting to form some nice clumps and feel really well anchored.
I think there is also still one delosperma in there and a bit of sedum but sedums don't stand much of a chance with birds trampling on them.

you can see some of it growing in this photo:

Inside things are starting to take off. It still surprises me how quickly small seedlings can start to turn into plants.

Here's an update on the Tagetes that have been re-potted and went from sharing a cell to having their own pot.
It's great to see that these are also responding really well to the LED grow lights.
note that although the photos are labeled as 'Disco Red' there are also 4 of the 'Jolly jester' variety in there.

and an update on the Coleus, I'll have to transplant these soon. They don't really need more root space yet
but they are starting to compete for light. This year I clearly got a better mix than last year.

Also a photo of the peppers in case there was any doubt about the effect of the fertiliser sticks.
These have all been transplanted to larger pots now with better compost.
The superhots are still a lot smaller but are doing ok, The Carolina Reaper seedling is a bit behind
compared to the others but it's looking fine otherwise.

The red tulips have mostly gone over but now the pink ones are starting to open up. I think I counted 3 that were still closed.
The large daffodils won't take much longer either and one already opened up today, that should give a nice display of pink and yellow.
I also have a pot with small daffodils but they got less sun and haven't even developed any flower buds yet. There is also one of those
growing in the container with the red tulips and that one is already flowering.

Heh, looks like maagdenpalm .. lemme see what that is in English .. ah periwinkle or vinca, not sure which one but looks like the same my mom has.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinca

And yes, had mom on the phone the other day, maagdenpalm (litteraly virgin palm) was blossoming .. actually there had been a couple of flowers during the winter already .. when it's not too cold it will blossom .. in autumn as well as in winter and spring.

And it is not only beautiful, it helps against wichcraft .. and er .. probably that is meant to be a good thing Laughing

BTW, the leaves gave it away.

yep,. I have to agree with Jan again Wink
Vinca Major which I believe is a native around here.
It's great ground cover if you have the space for it

keep looking Jake, you'll find a crocus someday, though I'll doubt that'll be this year.
They are fairly easy to recognize by their tufts of often striped leaves that look very much like grass.
Have to be quick to see the flowers though as they only last a few days.

on my end it's yellow & pink, yellow & pink, yellow & pink and green of course dwarf
I think that combination works great so I am glad they are all flowering at the same time.

in the meantime my order of (12) plants has arrived so I am busy re-potting and shuffling plants around.

here's a list of the new plants, some of which I've tried to grow before.

* Leontopodium alpinum (aka Edelweiss)
had one of these last year and it was getting devoured by some kind of leafminer insect. It did put up one hell of a fight and at the end
of the year it looked like it might pull true but then I probably killed it. I did like it very much though so let's try again.

* Calamintha grandiflora
had one of these twice before. The first time it actually did very well until at some point it suddenly started to wilt, the second time it started to wilt
very early on before it even flowered. Not sure what caused it,. it's a mint it shouldn't be that hard to keep alive. Maybe three times a charm.

* Epimedium warleyense 'Ellen Willmott'
Had a different variety of this last year which kind of struggled from the start and I am pretty sure it didn't make it.

* Hosta 'Pandora's Box'
Another dwarf Hosta, this time a variegated one and it's adorable.

* Ajuga tenorii 'Princess Nadia'
Got this one as ground cover for under the willow tree.

* Veronica longifolia 'Zoe' (± 70cm with soft blue flower spikes)
* Physostegia virginiana 'Red Beauty' (± 70cm with pinkish flower spikes)
* Geum 'Carlskaer' (± 40cm with with orange flowers on long dark stems)
I've combined these in a single large pot. They all like similar growing conditions and have tall flowers while still being fairly compact.

* Solidago 'Golden Dwarf' (dwarf Goldenrod, also one I've had before but managed to klll)
* Jasione laevis 'Blaulicht' (has spherical blue flowers on stems sticking out above the foliage)
I've combined these 2 in a single pot with the Scabiosa columbaria 'Flutter Pure White' that I bought earlier.

* Viola odorata 'Miracle Classy Blue'
It's an early flowering viola.

and last but definitly not least:
* Aconitum vulparia (aka wolfs bane, monkshood)
I finally got a monkshood (and it kinda terrifies me). Apparently it's a native but very rare.
This one doesn't get nearly as large as the more common Aconitum napellus and it has soft-yellow flowers.

a bit of a view of how some of the pots are currently setup.

The Henbane is still alive!

I started this annual/biennial from seed in 2021.
Although (or likely because) I neglected them I spotted new growth in 2022 on a couple of the plants that apparently survived the winter.

at the beginning of last year there were 3 plants left, 2 struggled and died early on but the largest one did great.
That one is still alive and has already put out a flower.

I also added fresh Henbane seeds to the pot last year and from those seeds 3 plants in varying sizes have survived as well.
They were clumped together a bit so I spread them out around the pot, placing the smallest ones at the front.

a little bit of DIY

Last year I placed the frames of 2 hanging baskets on top of the planter that I grew the Phacelia tanacetifolia in.
I did this to give the plants extra support so they wouldn't flop over but it also kept the birds from trampling on the seedlings.
It was a bit of a hassle to setup and I also didn't really like the look of it but it worked great.

This year I managed to get my hands on a piece of wire mesh which I bend into shape to fit the planter.
I'll add a couple of sticks later once the seedlings have grown a bit as I did last year.

Here is another non-crocus early bloomer. The plant id website says Scilla siberica. We had snow on the ground yesterday, but it already melted enough for me to get this pic.

This bloomed in my grandfather's garden. I was told that it's a daffodil.

that's dafonitely a daffodil Very Happy
looks like some nice clumps too, that'll look great when they are all in bloom.

They're still flowering here too, the large ones that is.
I also have a pot with small ones (narcissus minnow) that haven't flowered yet, which they should have by now,
but they probably didn't get enough sun. After reading up about daffodil blindness I was about to give up on them
but I noticed that there are actually small flower buds appearing in some so maybe they're only delayed.

There are also flower buds appearing in the Hyacinthoides non-scripta better known as English Bluebells.
Only a couple of them seem to have come above ground sofar but 2 of those already appeared early while
the others only showed up recently, so more could still come up.

I am quite amazed at the number of flowers they produce Very Happy
Some of them did fall over, not sure if it was birds or because I let the soil get a bit dry.
They are also slowly starting to go over but they'll have to make way for the peppers in about 2 weeks time anyway.

I have a different hanging planter this year.

In the last couple of years I had a hanging planter that I mostly used to grow petunias.
That usually worked great as you can see on this photo from last year:
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

This year while I was cleaning the hanger it broke because the plastic had become brittle over time.
I am kinda glad that didn't happen when I had a plant in it. Shortly afterwards I found a new hanging pot, with some violas in it,
at the local supermarket. I didn't really care for the violas, not that I hate them, but I guess they came for free with the pot.

I got that one more as a backup plan though because I had already been eyeballing something else.

Petunias are great but they mostly grow up and outwards and I'd like something that cascades down a bit.
While looking online for some suitable plants I stumbled upon a hanging pot which came with a couple of the plants that
I had already been considering to get,.. and it was on the website of the local shop that I have been getting most plants
from recently. It wasn't available though and I also didn't know if it would be at a later date, hence the backup plan.

I have been keeping an eye on it though and about 2 weeks ago I noticed they were in stock so I got one.
The pot itself is larger (diameter of 25cm instead of 20cm that I had before) and once I got it home I started to wonder
if it would even fit, especially with the plants poking out in all directions. It was a bit of a struggle to get it in place
but now that its hanging it instantly adds a lot of color to that corner and should do so for the next couple of months.

here's a list of the 4 plants it contains:
- Lobelia (blue)
- Verbena (red)
- Sanvitalia (yellow)
- Petunia/Calibrachoa* (white)

They mix nicely with the pink flowers of the Geranium robertianum and most of them should attract bees & butterflies.

(Petunia on the website, Calibrachoa on the label but that is basically a mini Petunia)
