For those of you that don't know about this...there is an incredible site dedicated to the American Music Maverick tradition:

http://www.musicmavericks.org/listening/

You can not only listen to the music and the radio shows that this site is based on but you can also feast on indepth INTERVIEWS by most of the heavy weights of new music including Lou Harrsion, Steve Reich, Milton Babbitt, Conlon Nancarrow, A loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong Lamonte Young interview and many, many more. Most highly recommended!

I dig that too. Just about all of his stuff. Symphony #4 is something else though.

When Charles Ives was a boy, his father told him, "If the man makes money from the music, it ruins the music and it ruins the man." Ives became a rich insurance executive. He would anonymously fund new music composers and performance groups. I once had the honor to spend a couple of days with Nicholas Slonimsky. He told me how Ives used to send him out on missions, all over the world, encouraging new music.

When I was a young man, I considered being a professional musician. It was pretty grim, for many reasons. I looked at Charles Ives as a role model, and became an engineer, and later an executive. Unfortunately, I was not as successful as Ives in neither music or business.
