Well, in this context the G5 hardware is powerful and inexpensive. And when they upgrade the workstations later on they can just set up the old ones as an extension to the rendering farm.

The rumour sites are reporting that Apple will start shipping 3GHz+ PowerPC 975-based systems later this year. These might have liquid cooled CPUs and many enhancements to the motherboard.
