Are you looking for a kit to build & modify, or are you looking to design & build something completely yourself?

Do you have any experience programming in C? A lot of good microprocessors exist for this purpose...and they are very cheap to obtain & work with. The Atmel AVR is my own favorite, but the PIC is very popular with the do-it-yourself crowd also.

Most of it can also be used with almost any 8-bit processor (8051, AVR, PIC).
