SC3 status ? |
 |
|
Hey folks,
I've been looking into SC3 lately, as i'm trying to find out my end all audio development platform.
(Unfortunately) i'm on windows xp, and it seems it's the least well supported OS for SC3.
The xp builds seem pretty dated, so has the development really stopped ?
How unfunctionnal is it as is ?
And lastly, what about the linux version, i reckon the gui stuff seems to be uncompatible with what's been done on mac, but besides that ?
Oddly SC3 seems like one of the most interesting platform, but at the same time, the harder to grasp partly because of these inconsistencies.
Hope someone can shed some light on this

development for SC3 on Windows was only really being maintained by one person- and he pulled it recently.
However you may want to look at Chuck instead- which is being developed for all platforms here
Another alternative is to get your hands on an older OS9.x Apple Mac and experiment with that (old G3's are so cheap these days). _________________ ACHTUNG!

The latest release for Windows is December 20, which is not too terribly dated. Also I don't think he's "pulled" the project entirely. He doesn't have much time to work on it but he does have a to-do list, expressed here in geekspeak.
I don't think the Windows version is ready for production use yet, but you can definitely get started learning the language and how to do synthesis. Remember, whether you go with SuperCollider or ChucK, you have a non trivial learning curve ahead of you, during which time you won't really be making music, just learning how to use the software. Think of it like learning an instrument -- you wouldn't expect to pick up a bassoon and sound like a pro in a couple of weeks, and you shouldn't expect the same thing in either sc or chuck.
In my case, it was about seven months before I was able to perform a fairly rudimentary piece in sc (rudimentary compared to what I'm doing now), and another couple of years to develop a composing workflow that I'm really comfortable with. I had some programming experience prior to picking up sc.
If you start learning SuperCollider now, I'm pretty sure there will be another Windows release by the time you have enough chops to do some real composition. In the meantime, you can definitely start learning synthesis and data manipulation (which, I recall from the other thread, will be very important to you).
Worst-case scenario, if another Windows release is not forthcoming, you can take any code that you write in SuperCollider and move it over to Linux easily.
Just within the last week, we checked in a lot of changes so that you can write GUI code that should run on Mac and Linux without changes. This thread included a preview. Eventually this will work in Windows also.
