Invisible files on OSX |
 |
|
a few days ago I had to completely reformat my internal HD of my PowerBook. So, I did a backup copy of it on an external HD and zapped the internal one. I knew it was going to be a long process to reinstall everything from scratch. After awhile I discover that the folder containing all my personal data (users/seraph) is empty (on the backup copy ) Many of the items inside that folder were also saved somewhere else but many others weren't ). I have spent the following 4 days reinstalling applications and trying to remember what I had lost then, by chance, I noticed that the "empty" folder was worth more than 10Gb of data I started googling for "invisible files" and discovered a small utility called XRay.
To make a long story short, thanks to that utility I was able to mount the folder content as disk image on my computer desktop and from there recover EVERYTHING I thought I had lost. It's a great joy, after 4 days of desperation to be able to say: "I am proud of myself, I am a real geek" _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I knew you would appreciate that I had to tell someone about it and, maybe it could be useful for someone else in similar situations. For some unexplainable reason an "invisible tag" had turned on, damn
Maybe it has something to do with "FileVault" that I had installed _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I use that and Data Rescue.
I wonder if the "invisible" thing is because of original security settings being lost. If the protections were 700 for example and you lost the owner because of a reinstall, it'd be invisible... _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
