Newbie help Subject description: I need a starting point |
 |

Alright, I've always liked Electronic music, but never seriously thought about attempting to make it myself. Anyway, my friend just happened to be getting rid of some stuff in her basement, and she offered to give me a Keyboard. I took it, and have been playing around with it ever since. As near as I can tell it is incapable of recording music. I literally know nothing about keyboards and synthesizers, I'm not even sure what the difference between the two is. I was wondering if anyone knew of a website or tutorial that could help me understand the basic terminology and techniques that go into the production of electronic music. If this isn't the appropriate place to be posting this sort of question, or a similar post like this exists, I apologize.
Thanks for any help,
Adrian |

A good place to start understanding synthesis here (start at the bottom):
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm
For production and all other related stuff, sound on sound is pretty good grounding and covers all kinds of music production not just electronic and a lot of their website is free.
I would reccommend buying the following magazines or reading their websites: sound on sound (as already mentioned), Future Music, The Mix and Computer Music. Sound on sound is the most pro but can be a bit unweildy to newcomers, the others tend to have more adverts n try to be "cool" but then they do tend to be easier to read.
I think if you want to put into practice the things you read get a copy of Reason or Fruityloops, both really easy to use pieces of software which mimic full studios inside yr pc, without any of the real world headaches that can come from interfacing real gear. I am not really a user of either software but have used reason and have actually had a release which featured sounds almost exclusively from there. I seem to remember Fruity Loops is a bit more loop orientated (clue in the name) but some folk (some on this forum, i think) swear by it.
Happy learning.
